Disclaimer: This is a British study that applies its findings to that country, but I'd bet that it would closely correlate to the US.

quote:

At least a million more Britons should be put on antidepressants, the authors of the largest ever review of the drugs today conclude. The research led by Oxford University, and published in The Lancet, examined 522 trials involving 21 types of medication over almost four decades. All were found to be effective, yet its authors warned that just one in six patients suffering from depression are receiving treatment.

quote:

Some of the best known antidepressants in Britain - such as Prozac - and the most widely prescribed drug, citalopram - were found to be among the least effective.

quote:

The UK already has the fourth highest levels of antidepressant prescribing in the Western world, with a tripling in prescription levels since the millenium.

quote:

The researcher suggested much of the opposition to prescribing of such medications came from an “ideological” standpoint rather than an assessment of the evidence. The study analysed 522 double-blind, randomised controlled trials, including previously unpublished results, comparing 21 types of antidepressant against placebos, and against each other. All were found to be more effective than a placebo, and researchers stressed that all might be the best drug for some patients.

quote:

The treatments agomelatine, amitriptyline, escitalopram, mirtazapine, paroxetine, venlafaxine and vortioxetine were found to be most effective, while fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine, reboxetine and trazodone were found to make the least difference.

Ehhhh, just eat right and get some exercise.

No way big pharma was behind this study.

So, you're saying that the results of the research were rigged? Good, now I can say that I don't believe in science.

It's probably closer to 5 in 6 not getting treatment.

Is it weird to anyone else that depression and suicide rates are drastically lower in 3rd world countries?

Why is the upper middle class mother of 2 driving a Range Rover depressed and on drugs in the US
while the malnourished family in Africa are smiling all the time?

Find something... anything... that can be labeled.

Find a treatment for that something in pill form.

Advertize it on TV directly to self-diagnosing potential patients... bypass doctors altogether and market direct to end-user.

Lobby doctors and entertain them with trips paid for by pharma to prescribe cure.

Make $$$$ to "cure" one thing so we can prescribe more medicine to offset side effects of "cure".

Only in the USA.

How you ensure more people don't get the treatment they need, stigmatize the shite out of it.

I'd love to see the ratio of those getting prescribed anti-depression meds vs those who actually need them.

Because there is no challenge to survive in today’s society.

Everything is easy.

That takes away the survival drive, resulting in depression.

There is an interesting study from Ireland during WW2 that showed a decreased suicide rate during war time.

While those things help, depression is a clinical condition. The actual chemistry of the brain in someone who is depressed is different and not functioning correctly.

Some have had bad experiences with the meds given to treat it in the past so are hesitant to try again. For others it’s simply debilitating so they don’t seek help.
