Nah, we are just overmedicated.
There's legit depression then there's the blues.

I would encourage you to talk to your doctor. As I mentioned there are many classes of drugs that work in different ways and each may affect a person differently. If one doesn't work, you can try something else. If you want to shoot me a PM I can point you to an option that I mentioned that I worked on which is relatively new and has been great for a lot of people. You shouldn't have to feel that way every day.

Is it weird to anyone else that depression and suicide rates are drastically lower in 3rd world countries?
Also peanut allergies. Could the two be related? Contribute $25MM to my study and you could save lives.

Nah, it's definitely underreported in third world countries.

In a different vein, stigma associated with the widespread belief that disclosure of mental illness might lead to embarrassment and discrimination is more common in underdeveloped societies, and may contribute towards underreporting of mental as opposed to physical symptoms; this too was evidenced in a WMH multicentre study [40]. Because these issues were likely to apply to our study, our findings of excessively prevalent depression and anxiety in Nepal appear even more remarkable since they were unlikely to be overestimates.

That graph shows that 71 out of 1,000 people in the UK take antidepressants. If it were 6 times higher per the original post then that would be 43% of the population that needs the drugs.
Seems high.
Seems high.

Better nutrition, some fresh air and exercise, and good wet sex would solve probably half the depression cases out there.

Yeah that’s not always the cure for mental illness caused by chemical imbalance.
People who think like you are the reason that only 1 in 6 are getting treatment. They’re afraid of being labeled crazy or getting the stigma of getting mental health treatment.

Like I said, these are the same people who said mental health funding and treatment are the answer to mass shootings and not gun control. So which is it guys?! (yeah, that's another thread, I just couldn't resist pointing out the hypocrisy)

I have no idea what you’re talking about, but you’re lying if you think that decreasing the mental health stigma and increasing mental health treatment would do anything but decrease the amount of mass shootings.

It's certainly helpful for "the blues"

I'm simply pointing out that that was the "answer" in those threads, but here it's "these people don't need treatment", "they just need exercise", "it's not real" type responses to what is a clinical mental health condition. So those two viewpoints are mutually exclusive but being made by the same people.
(Note: I agree that increased vigilance, treatment, funding for mental health is one component of the answer on the shootings, but I digress)

I’m so torn over this shite, part of me feels like people need to toughen the frick up and realize the world is a meat grinder. The other part of me feels like this is a shocking revelation as to how drugs control a large majority of the populations life now.
America is on a coke binge and we are failing to stop it.

There are plenty of scholarly and scientific articles out there for anyone who is interested in the physiology of the disease.

25 countries with highest suicide rates
You'll find several third world countries in that list.

Several? It's almost all 3rd world countries. Which would support the data that depression is underreported and undertreated in 3rd world countries.

I think those numbers are probably low, too.
Fortunately, we have plenty of professionals that are being treated for ADD, the steroid for lawyers and investment brokers.

I think America is over medicated as a whole, but mental illness itself is undertreated.
I’m probably the poster child for why you should try medication for mental health issues. From the time I was 12 until about 20, I suffered with anxiety/depression/OCD and just accepted it as a part of life.
I tried several different medications and finally found one that fixed most of my issues.
There are definitely side effects, but thinking back on how miserable I was before, I certainly think that I made the right choice.
