Take your family, and attempt to feed them with a job.
Now attempt to feed them without a job because the government won't allow you to work over a virus that has a mortality rate of less than 1%, and in the case of some places, 0.005% or less.
What’s that have to do with whether or not masks are effective?

But generally speaking, it is incorrect to look at the masks the CDC is promoting because they are not prevention from getting anything, they are prevention from spreading something.
They aren't effective in preventing the spread of the disease either.

Cloth masks as source control
A historical overview of cloth masks notes their use in US healthcare settings starting in the late 1800s, first as source control on patients and nurses and later as PPE by nurses.20
Kellogg,21 seeking a reason for the failure of cloth masks required for the public in stopping the 1918 influenza pandemic, found that the number of cloth layers needed to achieve acceptable efficiency made them difficult to breathe through and caused leakage around the mask. We found no well-designed studies of cloth masks as source control in household or healthcare settings.
In sum, given the paucity of information about their performance as source control in real-world settings, along with the extremely low efficiency of cloth masks as filters and their poor fit, there is no evidence to support their use by the public or healthcare workers to control the emission of particles from the wearer.

One thing this study doesn't report on is useage in the real world.
Their results assume that the masks are being worn properly, handled properly, sanitized properly and stored properly.
None of those things are being done in the real world.
I see maybe half wearing them properly.
I see them constantly touched, a huge no no.
No one is cleaning them properly. It's disgusting.
No one stores them properly. I see them on desks, counters, stuffed in pockets.
In the real world, mask usage creates just another nasty, filthy vehicle for pathogen transmission. Corona and other nasties.
Wash hands and stop touching your face people. Burn your masks!

He posted a pointless test that doesn't matter. I posted one that actually does.

The same article says we need to keep up social distancing.
Every responsible person with half a brain knows we need to continue social distancing. The debate is over whether we need to continue mandatory lockdowns. Most, including me, will continue with some level of social distancing after lockdowns are ended. For example: I will not be shaking hands or hugging folks, I'll wash my hands more and I'll give people more space. Also, large events will still be forbidden for a while - probably until we get a vaccine.

On a larger level, it’s completely baffling to me that a board that is overwhelming on team “Open this shite up” is also overwhelming on the team that is falling all over itself trying to discredit a measure that would get things opened up more quickly.
Gotta love the OT.

The sad part of all this mask crap is that you can STILL catch this bug even wearing a mask and gloves.
Posted on 5/7/20 at 12:37 pm to prplhze2000
no one has said that cloth masks are 100% effective. No one said that. Zero people said that.

Meanwhile since Austria required the entire country to wear masks they have gone from an infection rate of 90 per 100k to 10 per 100k.

Most here have no issue if you wear a mask. The issue is when you demand that others do.

Yep...the cloth mask I was given stops air from straight ahead, but it certainly found its way along my nose/under my eyes.

Freddie Mac is correct, the N95 will only help trap Covid-19 virus if it’s attached to water droplets, like in a sneeze, cough etc. it will not stop if it’s airborne. That’s is it’s fit correctly.
Correct. N95 masks only filter down to 0.3 microns. The virus is 0.1 microns on diameter.

N95 masks stop objects that are 2,500 nanometers. Coronavirus can be as small as 80 nanometers. It's like throwing a grain of sand at a chain link fence and expecting it to stop.
For large droplets, they get stopped by N95 and cloth masks. Mission accomplished? Nope. It sits on your mask and as you breath it pushes air over the droplet and aerosolizes it. You would be better off letting the large droplet hit the floor.
Masks are mostly psychological. Which I'm fine with if we can just get back to work.

It was an easy way to show dummies like you that masks do in fact so something.

Of course they do something. They just don't do something that's actually worthwhile besides provide an emotional safety blanky for dummies like you.

If your denim blue jeans can't stop a fart, your cotton mask won't stop a virus.

Every single thread about masks has at least a few posters talking about how it’s only the stupid, weak, scared or women that are wearing them. And given the fact that they typically get a good number of upvotes, I’d have to say that’s probably a pretty prevalent view point.
EDIT: Case in point, this from your last post:

There is an easy experiment everyone can do right now to show how good they are.
take a spray bottle. spray it through a mask at a sheet of white paper then remove the mask and spray a different sheet of white paper. Which one gets more wet.
Have a great day.
I'm not sure which direction you're trying to argue here... but... you should leave that cloth mask on the paper as long as you would be wearing it shopping in Wal-Mart or wherever.
In the end, both sheets of paper are going to be wet.
