Annals of Internal Medicine

quote:

Neither surgical nor cotton masks effectively filtered SARS–CoV-2 during coughs by infected patients. Prior evidence that surgical masks effectively filtered influenza virus (1) informed recommendations that patients with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 should wear face masks to prevent transmission

quote:

The size of the SARS–CoV particle from the 2002–2004 outbreak was estimated as 0.08 to 0.14 µm (5); assuming that SARS-CoV-2 has a similar size, surgical masks are unlikely to effectively filter this virus.

quote:

In conclusion, both surgical and cotton masks seem to be ineffective in preventing the dissemination of SARS–CoV-2 from the coughs of patients with COVID-19 to the environment and external mask surface.

They thought if it worked for the flu it would work for COVID, turned out not to be the case. If it’s not keeping infected patients from breathing it out into the environment, the mask sure as hell isn’t keeping you from breathing it in from the environment. Unless everybody starts wearing n95 masks, we’re wasting our time. And if you’ve never worn one, n95 masks are uncomfortable as hell.

So it works on the ones that don't have a cough?

At this point it’s pure optics. No one in decision making authority, public or private, has the balls to say “we need to open up I don’t care if our overall death toll goes from 125,000 to 150,000. At that point it’s a statistic.”

Even though everyone knows deep down it’s the only option. So you tell everyone to wear masks and it makes everyone feel better and the optics manageable

Most of what we've done during this has been about optics and feelings. We basically destroyed our economy so a few nitwits wouldn't have panic attacks.

Why on earth would you assume that? The issue is the size of the virus. Breathing or coughing, the virus is the same size.

From your OP:

quote:

Neither surgical nor cotton masks effectively filtered SARS–CoV-2 during coughs by infected patients.

If you’re trying to be funny, I missing the joke. Where in my OP does it say that masks filter the virus with breathing? Where in the article doesn’t say that? The issue is the size of the virus. To something as tiny as the COVID-19 virus, gaps in a surgical or cloth mask are as big as your mothers vagina, and as easy to penetrate.

I’m in the no mask camp, but the study only had 4 participants. How can they publish based on 4 participants?

It's not meant to filter the virus, its meant to slow down the distance traveled when exhaled, coughed, or sneezed from an infected person

We do not know whether masks shorten the travel distance of droplets during coughing. Further study is needed to recommend whether face masks decrease transmission of virus from asymptomatic individuals or those with suspected COVID-19 who are not coughing.

Wonderful idea. Absolutely no data to support it though.

From your article:

quote:

Patients were instructed to cough 5 times each onto a petri dish while wearing the following sequence of masks: no mask, surgical mask, cotton mask, and again with no mask. A separate petri dish was used for each of the 5 coughing episodes.

They had 4 patients cough 5 times on a petri dish.

They had zero patients breath normally on a petri dish.

So you’re intentionally misstating what the study said?

That’s 3 more than most studies.

Masks are worthless and only serve to generate fear and anxiety. Have some dignity and be a role model who’s not buying into this. Don’t be a narcissist.

The gloves are even worse.

The same way all this shutdown bullshite was predicated on one British dude who had his side piece ignore the stay at home order. Even he knew the bullshite he was pedaling was bullshite.
