They may not work to filter out the particles in the air, but they sure as shite keep you from touching your mouth and nose which may be more effective for the average person (not healthcare workers who are in close proximity to known infectious persons).

Glad you agree wearing a mask is pointless.

This is the issue of too much of medical reporting where the conclusions are taken by some as fact when in reality they are qualified with phrases like "estimated" and "assuming" and "seem to be" and "further study is needed."

For myself, wearing a mask in crowded public spaces is a bit like Pascal's Wager and not at all a political statement. There's another phrase that come to mind, current "best practices."

The medical experts don't seem to 100% agree with engineering precision exactly one way or the other, and it's a simple thing to keep me somewhat relatively safer than not.

It's not something I going to worry about or fret over. If it proves ineffective later by a rigorous scientific study, nothing much lost and move on.

CDC has recommended N95 for everyone for 6 weeks at least.

The study presents no scientific conclusions just slightly educated guesses.

quote:

assuming that SARS-CoV-2 has a similar size, surgical masks are unlikely to effectively filter this virus.

What kind of useless language is this. If you are doing science then isolate the virus particle put it under an SEM and measure the thing. Then you have to understand the average particle size being aerosolized by a person is not the same as a single particle size. Then you have to understand a bit about media filtration.

There is no doubt most fabric masks are less than 100% effective but then that may also be true of even P100/N100 masks depending on particle size and some other factors.

People could do a true science-based analysis of the efficacy of different filter media and mask types but this certainly isn't one of them. Just junk "science".

Anyone that is interested in protecting themselves and doesn't have a beard and feels the N95 masks are too uncomfortable look for a N95/N100 respirator type mask or get a 3M 6000/7000 series respirator and the appropriate filters. If you are at risk and want to be safe(r) there are reasonably comfortable options available.

In Belgium they were telling people to use coffee filters under cloth masks

Probably about equally ineffective.

A petri dish (90 mm × 15 mm) containing 1 mL of viral transport media (sterile phosphate-buffered saline with bovine serum albumin, 0.1%; penicillin, 10 000 U/mL; streptomycin, 10 mg; and amphotericin B, 25 µg) was placed approximately 20 cm from the patients' mouths.

quote:

The median viral loads of nasopharyngeal and saliva samples from the 4 participants were 5.66 log copies/mL and 4.00 log copies/mL, respectively. The median viral loads after coughs without a mask, with a surgical mask, and with a cotton mask were 2.56 log copies/mL, 2.42 log copies/mL, and 1.85 log copies/mL, respectively.

So let me see if I can recap here...

A sample taken 8 inches away from the face of a coughing COVID-19 positive person with a cotton mask had a 28% smaller viral load than when the patient coughed without one...

And the conclusion is...masks don’t work...In any circumstances....

Got it.

I'm gonna continue to take the CDCs recommendation to heart and wear a mask out regardless of how this board feels about it.

We’ve known since the start that only n95 masks work. You mean to tell me it took them 6 weeks to realize cotton don’t filter shite? SHOCKED.

*Filters 28% at 8 inches.

If you are closer to me than my dick is, get the frick away from me, or frick me. Either way, this study is dumb

So then there’s no reason to force people to wear them in public since they don’t protect others, right?

Masks seem to be working excellent for me. Everyone I have encountered by 3 degrees of separation is COVID-19 free. The is clear evidence and I'm gonna continue to wear my mask and use hand sanitizer before and after I enter a public space. I don't need a couple of idiots with a petri dish to teach me stupidity. They already caught it.

I still rather someone with Covid cough In my direction with a mask on then no mask... Just like I rather someone who urgently needs to take a piss, piss in their pants than no pants in my direction.
