Still using a 16-year-old Echo. I have replaced the fuel bulb and spark plug once each. I've run it with regular with cheap 2-stroke oil for as long as I've had it.

I myself am also the proud owner of an EGO string trimmer. A few guys have converted after seeing mine.

Remember, it's a DC motor so it can deliver 100% torque at 1rpm.

Also, it's very quiet and the speed is adjustable.

PS, get the blower to match. Nice to just grab it a go clean up.

Bought a Stihl battery operated few years back. It works well. I have several hundred linear feet to cover: front street, sidewalks, driveway, back fence line. It works fine. I hold it upside down to edge.

I like it now. But the re-spooling is a little wonky. I actually hated it at first because of that, but now I’m used to it. I don’t know if they’ve been updated but something that quick spools would be ideal if I bought one today.

Timely thread. My piece of shite Toro had the whole spool assembly fly off of it and I can't even find a replacement part for it. So anyways...don't buy a Toro.

Restringing is awesome. slide it through halfway, hold down the restring button and it winds itself.

Now that is slick!

Stihl. If you don't like that, then Stihl. Change the head to take pre-cut line pieces. Anything with auto spooling will disappoint.

I’ve had a Honda 4-stroke for about 8-10 years. Use tru fuel no ethanol no oil and it will last as long as you want it to.

Just residential yard a lot of brands are ok.

You have battery powered options
Dewalt
Ego
Sthil
Green works
Ryobi

Then gas For $200 or $259 ish on the top end for a basic unit.
Echo
Sthil
Efco
Shindaiwa

Depends on dealer and who gives good service or who do you like, ease of getting air filters & misc parts, and what feels comfortable to you.

True fuel or can fuels are good options.
They make the unit run hotter.
You have to run them wide open to get more oil mixture to keep them cool.

I have seen a few which means a small number burnt up due to people run can fuel and idle the units a lot. Again, it is rare while it does happen.

This is what I have too. With this you can get a ton of attachment: pole saw, edger, trimmer, hedge trimmer, blower, brush cutter, and even a tiller attachment.

Echo PAS225 Powerhead

Echo attachments

Still makes a power head I believe. Can’t go wrong with either one.

I take care of 1 acre yard, have gone all electric with Greenworks 40 volt tools. The weed trimmer will easily do the yard twice on one charge. Also have the blower, hedge trimmer and chainsaw. Will never own another gas powered yard tool.

Yeah my next trimmer is going to be this Ryobi 40v..I checked the Q&A at Home Depot and they said it will take the .095 line which I have a big spool of...so that's good.

We finally switched to battery after having a gas one forever. So much easier I’ll never go back to a gas one for the size yard we have

Get a Shindaiwa and run it on TruFuel. You'll save time and money and it will run forever.

Great advice! I have had one for YEARS and it has only been ran on TruFuel. Never given me a problem and cranks on 2nd pull every time.

sounds great, until you reveal that you have a yard the size of a shoe box.

I’m on a double lot. I have multiple batteries anyway from having same brand drills, saws, etc.

Stihl FS91r is what I got. Works great, starts easy. Have to restring every 3 cuts or so, but it only takes about 5 minutes. Not a big deal.

Stihl or Echo would be the only two brands I'd consider.

ETA: regardless of what you go with, get some high quality line and throw away the house brand crap that it comes with. good line makes all the difference in the world when it comes to string trimmers.

Suggestions? I need a trimmer that can trench as my sidewalks are not level. Also want the convenience you are speaking of.

I’ve converted to battery power for string trimmers
Yup, my 80V trimmer and edger are way more powerful than my Stihl's dreamed of being. Just have a backup battery always ready to go. Beats the frick out of buying ethanol free gas, mixing oil, carburetor adjusting and pull starting. Just pull the trigger and go.

Thanks guys.

I went with the EGO combo kit since I'm going to give cleaning my gutters with the blower a shot. I really wanted the Powerhead that's on some models, but the shorter shaft length and blower pushed me over to the combo pack.

Home Depot has it for $279 plus 11% off since they're matching Menards 11% rebate.

Btw, is everyone aware of Home Depot's unadvertised 11% rebate? It's only available in markets with a Menards, but they've been running it continuously since the whole COVID thing started. Otherwise it was about once a month. Google Home Depot 11 percent.
