String Trimmer Recommendations
Posted by Mizz-SEC on 8/4/20 at 1:08 pm01
Do y'all have recommendations for a good string trimmer with inexpensive compatible pre-spooled line?
The shite the local Walmart sells and stocks ain't cutting it. TIA.

Gas or battery?

Echo or Stihl. You can always change the head out if it doesn't have the one you are looking for.

My Echo has been a beast. About 7 or 8 years old and starts up pretty easily and runs strong.

This is true of just about anything Walmart sells.
You get what you pay for. You buy cheap crap, you get cheap crap.

I am a fan of Husqvarna. I have a commercial grade that is 15 years old. Only change is a new carb about 5 years ago and a couple primer bulbs.
I swapped to a Shakespeare Max Load Pro Bump head and run .090 line. Run Tru Fuel only.
The head holds 26ft of .090 and loads easily.
I also have a Husqvarna 40v Battery operated trimmer. I use it for the light stuff. Aftermarket heads are not recommended to run on those, though. So, I haven't tried swapping it. Run .080 on it.

Got a kobalt 40v trimmer earlier this summer and it's a beast.

Echo, Stihl, or Shindaiwa.
I’ve converted to battery power for string trimmers. I have a DeWalt. Batteries are interchangeable with my power tools.
Not noisy... no gas to fool with... don’t have to crank it (pull string)... plenty of power... batteries last long enough for the whole yard.
I have to load string on the head a couple of times a summer.

For line convenience look for one of the newer ones where you never open the spool you just feed the line through to the middle and wind it up.
One of the best inventions ever in the history of yard work.

Gas Trimmers are great but most of us on here can get away with a good battery operated trimmer
I own a 1 acre lot and use a Ryobi 40V. Love It. Their 40V blower is amazing as well

call the repair shop nearest you and ask them what brands they service. buy that brand. use truefuel in it.
i got my stihl down yesterday after sitting for at least 2 years. added truefuel and it started and idled on the 3rd pull.
eta: i agree with the battery idea. i sold my soul to dewalt years ago because i wasn't using it. we have the blower, and will probably get the little chain saw soon. they require no maintenance. once you get past the initial investment in batteries, it's not too expensive I'm told that commercial mowing operations expect to go battery in a few years.

I'm done with gas trimmers. I don't need to use one super often so it makes no sense to have one where the gas and oil will just sit there and degrade. I switched to a battery powered one and it's been a piece of cake.
