I'm done with gas trimmers. I don't need to use one super often so it makes no sense to have one where the gas and oil will just sit there and degrade. I switched to a battery powered one and it's been a piece of cake.

I started with Black and Decker electric trimmer/blowers but after moving I soon discovered the larger yard requires better tools.

Agree, I'm making the change. They are finally making some good battery powered equipment.

Got a trimmer and just added a battery powered pole saw, which works great.

I have a Ryobi 40V battery trimmer. The string is easy to load. You just cut a ten foot section, feed it through the two holes from one side to the other, and there is a little handle you use to turn the spool and it winds onto the spool perfectly.

I've been using a Stihl fs80r hassle-free for 10+ years. The only thing I've had to do is clean the carbon buildup off of the spark arrestor which took about 5 minutes.

It has a manual head but that requires about 5 minutes of re-stringing every couple of months.

I have a 15,000 sf, landscaped yard. Lots of trimming and edging. One battery charge will do the whole yard. The blower, however, depending on how much needs to be done, might not make it. To offset that, I do all my trimming and edging first, take that battery and put it on charge, then mow (I use an 80V electric that is awesome) and then take use my blower. If I run out of juice on the blower, I have the freshly charged battery from the edger to finish with.

One battery failed of the two I have. Ryobi replaced it at no cost, and they are fully warranted (*no depreciation) for 5 years.

Whatever you get use the fuel that comes in the cans and nothing else. I been having the red one, (Murray I think) from Wal Mart going on 6 years..... still kicking arse. Starts right up too. I did swap the head out for the one I will link below. Makes changing string way easier.

Once my Echo gives up the ghost, I'll be switching to a battery powered one as well. Already have a battery powered blower. The battery on the blower only lasts for about 30 minutes of use though, which is a drawback.

converted to battery power for string trimmers
quote:

Not noisy... no gas to fool with... don’t have to crank it (pull string)... plenty of power... batteries last long enough for the whole yard.

that sounds great, until you reveal that you have a yard the size of a shoe box.

have to load string on the head a couple of times a summer.

I have a stihl. I believe this one is one of the kombi systems allowing for multiple attachments, trimmers, pole saw, edger, etc

I have Ego 56V battery powered. 1/3 acre lot and its PLENTY.

As the owner of the outdoor store told me, "I have access to free mechanics and whatever else I need, and I still have one of these because they're the shite"

Restringing is awesome. slide it through halfway, hold down the restring button and it winds itself.

Bought an Ego Recently too. They are the shite! No gas, Wind power spools in place, quiet and powerful enought to cut everthing I have and a half more. The restringing feature is the best part and there is plenty of power.

I have had 3 friends buy them after seeing mine in action, because they're so easy and maintenance free. We all have nice yards so its not like we need it to perform miracles.

My Stihl is beaucoup years old. Starts every time. Don’t know why anyone would get something different. Maybe if you have a really small yard.
