If I'm GM, I hire non union workers and move on. The days of unions being necessary for auto workers are over.
Aren't a lot of the GM plants in closed shop states where you have to be union to work there?

If so, can GM legally hire non-union workers to staff the plants?

Michigan and Ohio are “right to work” now.

frick UAW workers and frick GM, Ford, and Chrysler. I never buy American Cars.

Back in the day when I was a bartender I worked at a restaurant/bar right down the street from a Ford Plant. All the Ford baws would come in on their lunch breaks and treat our staff like shite. They would all make up these UAW/Ford Employee discounts that we didn't offer but they would stomp their feet and said we did offer them as its part of their union contract, and how no Ford employee would come in again if we didn't honor it. We were like, good! Don't come back! They were terrible tippers and treated us like shite.

They would also get shithoused drunk on their lunch breaks, and then go back to work. How could you buy a Ford vehicle after seeing that?

How much do you think you should get paid for turning a screw?

That's why I could never work one of these jobs. Turning a screw for a living must suck the soul out of you.

But it makes perfect sense, the Ford employees I interacted with were all dumb as a rock. Definitely not the best and brightest out there, its no wonder they have to be led by their hand by unions.

We would make fun of Ford Employees because we had an ex-con who worked in our kitchen get hired there. So we would make jokes like you had to have at least 3 felonies on your criminal record to get hired by Ford.

I think what really makes them look stupid is they think that if they go on strike, Ford won't be able to find anyone to turn a screw...like..I dunno a machine. The documentary I mentioned above alludes to a large part of the factory work force losing their jobs to automation.... they are really pushing that timeline forward with shite like this

A lot of the problems the industry has are directly tied to make-work bullshite guarantees for UAW employees in exchange for what automation they had.

If Ford or GM were to try and replace UAW employees with machines under Obama, the National Labor Relations Board would rule against them and bend them over.

With Trump? Probably an even money shot either way. Trump is sympathetic to blue collar labor like the UAW rank and file but he will call bullshite on what they are asking for.

You will be told that it is due to unions. Without unions you would be forced to work for free.

Years ago Yes but in today’s society the need for Unions is no longer relevant.

If anyone that should strike it's Walmart workers. They make like $10/hr,while every Walton family member is a gazillionaire

How would Walmart every be able to replaced such "skilled" workers?

For a strike to work you have to have some kind of negotiating leverage. Generally, that means a skill-set that is hard to replace. Stocking shelves and lazily manning a checkout counter isn't an irreplaceable skill.
