UAW strikes at GM, attempts to send message to Ford and FCA: now that the economy is strong, labor wants a cut of the profits.
The FBI and IRS recently raided the homes and offices of UAW officials. The UAW has walked away from a deal that would bring electric vehicle projection to a shuttered factory in Ohio and expand production and dramatically UAW employment at GM in the rest of the US over the next 4 years.
Update: General Motors has posted the high level details of the offer the UAW rejected:

The Teamsters are refusing to haul the cars that are already built.

Given their history, I’m surprised they aren’t trying to dump them in an underground drainage canal.

Teamsters may actually be worst than the UAW.

When I was at LSU, we had the chance to tour the Ford Louisville assembly plant- this was back in the original Explorer and Ranger days.
I will NEVER forget a man on the line hooking chains to the chassis- a job that my 12 y.o. could do with no training. His comment- “Stay in school boys and girls, or you can come get a $75,000 a year union job like me”
This was 1996. Let that sink in.

If I'm GM, I hire non union workers and move on. The days of unions being necessary for auto workers are over.

GM will take the opportunity to pull down inventory I suspect.

If I had a union job at a GM plant, I'd be doing what I can to protect my benefits as well. You see how little union workers have to pay for their healthcare? It is unreal.

The UAW will bribe someone at General Motors, then use the deal as precedent to frick over Ford and Chrysler.
I am on team GM. Labor had a good deal to bring jobs back to Lordstown and rejected it. The company has enough inventory supply dealers for a while. Labor needs to simmer for a bit.

The big 3 have been “over producing” for about 6 months in preparation for this negotiation.

We had a chance to cripple the UAW in 2009 and set American manufacturing up for success long term. The Obama admin gave them a lifeline.
This is why Nissan and VW make cars in Mexico and in the southern US. The unions aren’t as powerful.

Good for the union for standing up for their rights.

What rights are they not being given?

UAW has been weakened over the years, thankfully. However, I would like to get down to the real deal of why its "tough" on these workers. I don't really see GM wallowing in cash, meanwhile every UAW worker is driving 1/2 ton pickups and pulling boats.
If anyone that should strike it's Walmart workers. They make like $10/hr,while every Walton family member is a gazillionaire.
