Like others have said it's probably coming from the river. Barges getting set up/ bumping. containers, diesel engine backfire or slamming into gear. Grew up on the river in Ms and it can be very loud and wake you up at night. Large open space for the sound to carry also.

I can 100% guarantee its not coming from barges or boats on the river.

How?

We used to hear deep booms in Harahan/River Ridge area and I was always told it was barges mooring.

It is the exact same noise every night, though. Hard to believe a barge would do that.

In your opinion what else could it be.

I'm really not being a smartass, just looking for logical explanations that are traced back to an industrial cause like the river/docks/barge

Because barges banging against each other don't make that kind of noise plus if if were barges hitting each other hard enough to make that kind of boom we'd have some seriously damaged barges on the river every single night. There would be sunken barges up and down the river.

Much more like an explosion than a collision

Most of the collision noises I hear are from the rail cars slamming into each other.

I didn't hear any loud booms last night. I can see the blue cranes in the port from my porch.

Yes 3 blocks, sure you can here them, not 5-7 miles away.

Since my assumption of fireworks was shot down earlier, Im coming around to the fact that this mystery noise is something else. FWIW I heard it last night around 7:30-8:30sh in Lakeview. Maybe coming from city park area?

Have to admit this one has got me stumped and I haven't seen a good reason as to why its occurring?

I'm in the Irish channel and a week or so ago I was out on the porch and it sounded like way over towards the broadmore area'ish if I had to guess a direction

I have heard them numerous times and wanted to come here to ask about it. Can OP update thread if this mystery is ever solved?

I live in the Faubourg Bouligny neighborhood. Some of the noises come from manipulation of empty containers at the docks.

The loudest noises come from car coupling impacts of empty box cars on the Public Links Railroad yard and tracks. The sound levels seem magnified if you are in a down-wind direction.

Oh, and my wife has had conversations with management of both the Port and the Railroad about this, haha.
