This is the best explanation I've seen.
If you check out all the "Fireball" reports on the American Meteor Society website from Tuesday evening, they coincide precisely with the time and orientation of a path crossing New Orleans, with a final trajectory more or less in line from Houston to Austin, Texas. At this point, since we are at the peak of the annual Geminids shower, I have no doubt whatsoever that a flaming meteoroid exploding overhead -- causing both an audible explosion and a more subtle sonic boom -- is what people heard. The fact that it was overcast and beginning to rain explains why the phenomenon was not witnessed visually more directly, but I'm confident a replay of area surveillance video could reconstruct the event somewhat.

Didn't read the link, so yea that is odd. Maybe someone driving thru a nitroglycerin plant then?

I'm at my cousin's house a few streets from Audubon park, anyone else heard it?
Heard another one right after

Yea but simultaneously and consistently cannot be meteors.

Is it a kind of low boom? Almost hollow?
Posted on 1/11/17 at 8:38 pm to TigerTalker16
Just heard it on State St

I'm near the park on Calhoun and heard the same thing. I told the SO it sounded like a gun shot.

Are you a boom expert or something?

I've heard these noises too over the past month or so in BR. Sounds like cannon going off or something
It is weird no one knows what it is yet

Like others have said it's probably coming from the river. Barges getting set up/ bumping. containers, diesel engine backfire or slamming into gear. Grew up on the river in Ms and it can be very loud and wake you up at night. Large open space for the sound to carry also.

This is what i thought at first. My SO has been living Audubon/West Riverside her entire life pretty much and Insist it's not the barges making these noises.

It is the exact same noise every night, though. Hard to believe a barge would do that.
