I used to live over there by Children's and it was coming from the docks.

Is this something else?

It could be when they are connecting train cars together in the train yard. It is usually at night and can be heard around the city on different nights depending on the wind direction.

My first thought was the docks or transformer blowing but it's been going on for weeks now and it's the same noise. Someone in nextdoor contacted entergy and said they did not detect anything. Anyway, the dog is not liking it at all.

I've heard them recently in Broadmoor by Vendome/Nashville. It's much louder than fireworks and it's certainly not gunshots.

It could be a conductor switching out rail cars. When I worked at exxon I was never far from railroad tracks. I've never heard anything so loud in my life as when two rails cars colide too fast.

I work on Jefferson Highway just down from the HPL bridge and I've heard them just as you've described and beginning when you said you've heard them. Sounds like a military style weapon.

No way they would be testing some sort of weapon on a ship across the river at the ship yard huh?

Are they even building any more of those funky angled ships I saw being towed in the river about 2 years ago?
