@JackSillin
quote:

10-15kts of northwesterly wind shear trying its very best to open up Ida's NW eyewall as it bears down on the Louisiana coast.

If successful, it might knock the max winds down by a few mph prior to landfall but widespread destructive winds are certain at this point regardless. LINK

Unfortunately, this shear will also push some big rain totals to the East side of the storm.

So this thing is a storing cat 4 most likely will be a cat 5 at landfall is supposed to break up so much it because a cat 1 by the time it hits BR?!? Really?

Yeah I am not sure I’d rely on it weakening by that much. But hopefully it will.

This isn’t looking good. Pressure down to 923mb and there is still some runway for strengthening. Anyone know the last time a storm this powerful made landfall in Louisiana?

A 15-20 mile jog

That seems to be what's happening. It's moving west, but that won't be any better for New Orleans or Baton Rouge.

Storm surge and winds will be catastrophic for all SE Louisiana south of latitude 30°.

You're seeing the minimal shear work on the eye.

I just woke up, was that a serious post?

Yes, I have multiple friends who have had water go into their house (not a lot, but enough to ruin floors) from their pool overflowing and the drainage not properly setup to handle it. This is due to rain flooding, not surge. I’m just going to take that one off the list entirely next time. It is the least important on the whole list.

Reposting from before.. this is not a complete list, but this is a good plaice to start.

1) Charge your phones & tablets & batteries

2) Fill the Bath Tub with Water
(use it to flush toilet when water is turned off)

3) Find an axe.
(if you flood, you might need it to break the roof open to escape)

4) Make a Safe Room
(no windows if possible)
(put mattresses in front of windows)

5) Do not run a generator in your house or garage
(the Carbon Monoxide can kill you)

6) Fill up plastic cups with water and put them into the freezer.. or use jugs or just something..
(can use to keep food cold longer once the power goes out)

7) Put candles and flashlights and all stuff you might need in the safe room

8) Stay away from large trees outside
(they might fall on the house)

9) Remove all stuff from outside and move it into your house or garage. Chairs, Tables, anything can become a projectile. If you have a trampoline, take it down.

10) If you have a pool and are at risk for flooding, you should drain your pool to 1/3 full. You can also toss your lawn furniture into the pool instead of keeping it inside your house or garage if you prefer.
(don’t completely empty your pool as it it might pop out of the ground)

11) Consider making future hotel reservations nearby to the North & West or your current location in case your power goes out for an extended time period. I like to do blocks of 4-7 days back to back.. and then I just cancel them as needed. If you wait, there likely won’t be any availability.

#1 should be getting the vaccine

Just saw this tweet:

Based on the radar presentation and hints of a secondary wind maximum appearing in the latest reconnaissance flight legs, it appears that an eyewall replacement cycle is beginning. Ida has likely peaked in intensity.

Not sure 20-30 miles even matters

Having just driven from Mexico Beach through to 30A you can still see the difference years later that 20-30 miles makes with a storm of this intensity.

PCB was 80% fine and Mexico Beach was 80% gone after Michael.

Jack is one of the better people working in modeling and forecasting right now. Even the top mets have looked to him for his work.

He's actually been working in meteorology since he was like 15-16 on the private side.

How about a little personal responsibility?

All of us online are very blessed to have our intelligence and intuition (we are all on this forum to proactively gain more knowledge on the situation). We are leaders in this scenario.

However, there are other good people (some neighbors) that just aren't at the same level of independence in this type of situation and need triggers like a contra-flow being open, emergency texts, local politicians pleading them in hourly press conferences to please leave if they can, etc. to help persuade them to follow the pack.

You can think of some. They needed the extra push to get out of harms way.
