Do y’all get the impression that more people than normal decided to ride this one out?
Yes. And a shitload of that blame rests on our elected officials who have been basically silent and pathetic and also the complete lack of trust many have now in the media and government.
For Katrina everyone was glued to the TV and they started mandatory evacuations and contra flow and national guard declarations and all that.
Also iPhones didn’t exist so if you were told to get the frick out you listened. Now everyone is an expert on everything and no one listens or cares.
For IDA just 24 hours ago Latoya told everyone to just stay in place and not a single person anywhere even seemed concerned.
I fear we’ll see loss on stupid levels just because of the amount of people who didn’t take this seriously.

Hell, find a rest stop a safe distance away, or a WalMart parking lot, if money is tight

Maximum sustained winds are now estimated to be 130 mph (215 km/h). This makes Ida a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Ida's central pressure has fallen 6 millibars during the past hour.
A live look at me in my living room as I can't turn away from this site and the TV.

There is a very important discussion about emergency management to come out of this, but tonight ain't the time.

It means you know how people still talk about Katrina almost 20 years later.
The fricked-up thing is that Ida will make landfall exactly 16 years to the day as Katrina.
August 29th is a day that can frick right off in this part of the world.

Lafayette has to be a better proposition than New Orleans right now right?
I wonder if I can beg people to leave.
Lafayette is a waaaaayyyy better option right now than anything east of Morgan City.
But can they get there? North is probably the best option

My Parents aren't leaving Denham....my brother won't answer his phone near LSU.
I always said I would never leave, but this has me spooked. I'm currently trying to wake my wife up to find out what to bring and packing several suitcases.
Im having a hard time leaving my parents

More people rode it out because of Zeta moving at the speed it did causing people to forget exactly how bad these things get
This isn't a good setup at all.
Everything has gone in favor of this being a very bad storm event. We had what you mentioned. We had seeming lackadaisical leadership from the government. We had a series if unfortunate events with recon that left the true nature of this storm to be determined in the middle of the night. And we have a storm that is bombing out in the middle of the night only hours from landfall. The worst combination of everything, really.

I have family in St Charles Parish. I’m so glad they listened to my advice and got out.

Just isn't cool to me. Only been here 12 years but still reading hard heads keeps me up during these events. Same dudes who say buckle down in April and May.

I can’t believe I actually considered staying. I’m shook right now. I legit think I won’t have a home to go back to. I’m worried about all my neighbors and family who didn’t leave. I’m mad actually, that people stayed.
Where do you live?

Tell them to write their social security numbers on every limb and their torso and forehead in case they need to be identified.

So it ended up that we did happen to have recon for the key moment tonight. That last one in the early evening showing a closed eyewall was the harbinger of what was to come.
