Event

When they say BR looks to get hurricane force winds, it's right at 74mph and the very very southern tip of BR

Hurricanes are remembered for damage caused and impact. Bottom line. Gustav wasn't that powerful, but people remember it because it caused uncharacteristic damage for its strength, mostly due to reasons other than the hurricane itself. The BR grid got exposed.

The whole West 1/2 of Katrina died off at landfall.

Not to offend anybody

But Katrina was boasted as a “Cat 4”

But I seem to remember that after retroactive analysis of wind measurements in the New Orleans area it was only a Cat 2/3 when it hit that area. Again that’s just a vague memory I have because when I heard that it really surprised me.

Discounting the severity of Katrina gets in the way of anyone that likes to belittle the experiences others might have had with Gustav or Laura. So yeah people will be offended by those facts and might even think you are undermining the severity of Hurricane Katrina.

But Katrina was not primarily a wind threat for Jefferson Parish and much of New Orleans. Storm surge and flooding in populated areas were primarily what made it a catastrophic event with so much human suffering there.

As someone who has been through 90+ mph sustained winds…I implore anyone who might face that in a residential building to seriously consider evacuation. Just because you might be confident that you aren’t at risk for flooding doesn’t mean you want to go through hurricane force winds for hours. Especially if you have kids or elderly family members with you.

Gustav gave BR some of its strongest winds ever recorded.

Still serious, but a lot better picture than what some were predicting yesterday.

I’m sure the people of the Mississippi gulf coast would disagree. But everyone has already forgot that landmass was even hit.

Don’t try to argue facts with those who have little to no understanding of them. You’ll never win.
