Live oaks are one of the best trees to withstand with such deep roots.

I had two oaks uproot during Sally. One came right through my living room.

I had a 50 ft oak snap in half for Laura and another smaller one uprooted.

Wife and I having this discussion.
1) Trees. BR has a lot of a trees and this is gonna knock a bunch down. If you don't have trees near your house or have somewhere to go without trees, you'll probably be safe, assuming the house is solid.
2) Flooding, but this is minimal concern for us.
3) Gotta weigh pros/cons. The howling winds and imminent danger feeling for hours on end, scared dogs, being up all night, toddler possibly not being able to sleep through the night, and no power vs. the inconveniences of hauling the family, including dogs, in a car and sitting in traffic for hours on end to sit in a cramped hotel room for a couple of days.

Apparently during all the preparations yesterday someone left a gate open and I have 2 donkeys on the loose
Nothing like a 12 hr night shift to come home and go on a donkey hunt before all this bullshite

Intermediate advisory just came out (no new cone with this one), winds are up to 85mph, pressure down to 985mb.

Live oak or water oak? Water oaks are notoriously one of the worst trees during storms and live oaks one of the best. Shallow v deep root system is the difference.

I just saw the idiot doctor fear mongering at governor dumb bell’s press conference yesterday. They need to shut up and give COVID a break until this is over.

A storm’s coming and he’s out chasing arse.

Live Oaks don’t have a deep root system; however, they do extend past the drip line.

It’s 100% the potential loss of power/AC. No sense in sitting in a warm dark house with little to no cell service for however long when I can just go somewhere more comfortable. Oddly, if I was concerned about my house at all, I’d be more inclined to stay so I could deal with issues head on.
From Metairie FWIW.

Hey man. Best of luck down there. You riding it out in BR?

Smaller one was a water oak. The big one was a live oak but didn’t uproot, it broke in half about 15 ft up.

We are still over 24 hours from landfall. A lot can change. Also this thing is going to be strong af at landfall. I don’t begrudge nola area peeps for leaving. Could go 80 miles west of us or it very well could slam us directly.
essentially what you're suggesting is for ppl to live in panic while a hurricane is projected to land over ~60 miles away from them with less than 2 days to landfall
if that's the mentality I need to be having at this time. then it makes absolutely no sense to live here

I've got a colossal live oak in my yard. That thing didn't get as old as it is without surviving some badass storms.
I have one too. It’ll crap allot of baby limbs but will not fall

Yep this is exactly where I am. Completely on the fence about getting on the road

190 year old live oak. Live oaks can withstand hurricanes right?
I’d say about 190 years worth in your case. But every dog (tree) has its day.

Just cancelled my hotel room, we are staying in Mandeville. Had 7 trees removed a few months ago, so that’s good. I did just build a big outdoor patio with a tin roof, a little nervous those panels may fly away but other than that we should be good.
