re: Stores that rushed to install self checkouts that they don’t use

Why do you think a lot of stores are offering free delivery
You get payment upfront and theft is non existent (for the store) if delivery takes a picture at the homeowners doorway.

That leads to ice cream and meat being left in the buggy as a protest.
That happens.
That happens.

GOAT checkout
Sam's Scan & Go and then just walking out through the big loop thing that scans what you have in the basket...then the Sam's person saying, "thank you, have a nice day".
If Sam's can make it work, why can't Walmarks.

The promise of self-checkout was alluring: Customers could avoid long lines by scanning and bagging their own items, workers could be freed of doing those monotonous tasks themselves and retailers could save on labor costs.
All that has happened since the rollout of self-checkout but so has this: Customers griping about clunky technology that spits out mysterious error codes, workers having to stand around and monitor both humans and machines, and retailers contending with theft.

Walmarks close to me is almost 100% self check, the other one has zero.
Which part of town has zero self check?

actually it is because of theft
Who didn’t see that coming?

Some stores video tape the transaction. You would think they could manage theft via that, even if it after the fact.
Start banning thieves. Put their pictures up on a banned poster board.

Oh you've met my mother in law? (not sure about meat and ice cream, though)
our W-M still uses the "laned" self checkout as opposed to the "corrral" setup that the newer ones use. can be slow but the attendant will open up unused lanes as needed. our Kroger's machines are much more picky about scanning and bagging. Lots of waiting for attendant to swipe and OK

I do too. But my grocery store in town weighs what you set in the bagging area and won't let you scan the next item until that weight is somehow verified, to ensure you're bagging everything appropriately. It glitches a lot though and will lock you out of the process no matter what you're scanning. Luckily, there's only 4 self-checkouts and they usually have someone standing right there overseeing it and they can bypass from their own kiosk screen.

Back at Christmas, when self-checkout lines were long, and only a few registers were open, a Wal-Mart employee told me tney are only allowed to monitor a certain number of self-check stations (maybe 6 or 8) so they can provide assistance as needed, and to keep an eye out for attempted theft. Allegedly, because of being short-staffed, that's why so many stations were closed.
FWIW, her explanation sounded reasonable to me.

Do you often require help with the arduous task of scanning items and tapping a credit card?
Machines malfunction all the time. I remember some places had the ones that wanted to read that you put the item in the bag, but then keeps telling you to put item in the bag after you did.
And if I'm buying beer you need someone for that.

Dollar General closed their self checkouts because……..theft. If the use one when crowded an employee scans the items. No theft.

About the only positive thing I can say about the Rouse’s that replaced our Winn Dixie earlier this year is zero self checkouts.

Walmart self-checkouts have facial recognition to identify suspected (and known) shoplifters. You’re never really alone.

People don’t want to work, but they are the same people bitching about the price of gas, food, etc..
Quit complaining and get a job!

Listen.
I’m not excusing theft and have never done so but I never noticed goods getting discounted because I used self checkout.
With that said I also never got a check in the mail for doing what used to be someone’s job.
So I can understand the thought process here.

Walmart neighborhood market that I go to for most groceries just underwent some renovations. Prior to that, they had 2 self checkouts with full conveyor belts on them. I don't mind this type because I can unload the cart all the way, then roll it forward to the bagging area and fill it back up as I scan things. After the renovation, they are still physically there, but never open. Instead there is a little corral of self checkout kiosks with one employee watching them. The most you can get bagged is maybe 3-4 small grocery bags, then you're trying to put them somewhere while you continue. Give me the first option and I will gladly use it, and if I only have a handful of items I will use the second option. Outside of that, I like for a person to ring me up just because it is the traditional full conveyor belt setup and I can completely unload the cart.
Publix near my house is the same way. 3 self checkout stations, but the bagging area is so small.
