PROMPT: I want to make myself jealous after reading this, but im concerned no one else will. I want it to sound like i made good money in my career, but that my Son would worry about paying for school even though there is a fund. I need it to sound like he was really good in HS sports, but we had to hold him back so he was bigger than all the other private school kids in his area. We need it to sound like we are moving to some exotic beach desination, when in reality its only Vaginia Beach and since we clearly are not military, we don't know why this is a terrible move

OT says only soyboys go to college, real men go into the trades

Male only liberal arts college? That couldn’t sound more gay. Be glad he isn’t going there.
Not the vibe when I was there. Talking to coaches, players, former players. It was pointed out that Longwood College is 5 mins away, where 5,000 young fillies await.
Also, Hampden Sydney founders included Patrick Henry and James Madison. I don't think "gay" was in fashion. They were men.

A plumber is the second most revered figure on this board and quickly gaining ground on Jesus!

With powdery wigs and tights and pantaloons. Men, dammit!

If the young man is ready to work, and passionate about a trade then let him go.

Ingalls is good if he sticks with it but the shipyards have a lot of turnover. If it’s welding, electrical whatever the actual trade is, I’d go talk to the union hall apprenticeship before fully committing. If he gets a IBEW journeyman ticket, he can work anywhere in the country.
To add to that, the skill level for a local like the one in Norfolk is probably going to be significantly better than an Ingalls electrician. A 3rd year IBEW apprentice is basically equivalent to an Ingalls journeyman.

His ultimate goal is to get out of Virginia for Florida. We have family / friends in PCB, one of whom is an elec contractor. That's what he's targeting.
Then he absolutely needs to go IBEW, and he'd almost certainly make a lot more money in Norfolk over the Florida panhandle.

Looks like he made a timely choice... Cao has been in office for a few weeks, and this! Splendid.

The most compelling was one close to us, Hampden Sydney in Farmville Va. Male only, liberal arts / business, created in 1775, every building on the Natl Historic sites registry. Bunch of rich families, lots of alumni, tradition. I did the parents tour. They have beaucoup money. The football facilities for a div3 team were amazing
Not saying your son made the wrong choice, but a football star at a private school with wealthy alumni will have a lot of doors open for him.

10K a year for that school is a heck of a deal

Sounds awesome. Kudos.

And, academics of course. They require all students to take a Rhetoric course once a year where they learn/reinforce how to prepare for debates, presentations, high pressure communications. I was all over that. Oh well.

I don’t think D3 can give athletic scholarships.

quote:You are correct, they don't. What they do is find "financial aid / scholarships" for kids they want there. They found 60K a year.

Hampden Sydney is fun as shite. I partied up there. A lot of guys transfer to UVA after a year or two because you qualify for instate admissions, but most end up loving it.
However if fraternities are your thing, they (used to) haze on another level. A lot of wealthy kids go there and you have a strong alumni network. A buddy went there and still talks about that place in high regard and goes back a lot. Alumni network hooked him up with a great lawfirm gig out of law school in DC.
Princeton Review ranks it the 2nd strongest alumni network in the nation.

New construction plumbing... no shite to wade through, and make good money... nothing dirty before 9:30 and nothing new after 2
