Whole bunch of mouth breathing idiots over in the Poli thread about his death if you want to be entertained.

ETA: I see I'm late to point this out

Yeah, he had some problems in the digging apartment. I think Steve Hawking would agree with you that he wishes he had the capability to dig a well.

Not picking on you landshark, but please read my corrected response which was posted before yours. Several of you guys have made the same point of his physical disability which I have already said I should have mentioned.

Many people on that board would be ok with some form of Christian theocratic government

they should move to saudi arabia if they want a theocracy.

Are there any living scientists left at Hawking's level? Just off the top of my head I guess Laurence Krauss is the next one up who is still doing research.

Without delving too deep into politics, there was a lot of theocracy put in by the founding fathers that is now roundly mocked and forced out. A lot of people just want things to mirror the country the founding fathers envisioned.

Yes, except a lot of the top level is focused on different aspects, mainly string theory

The poliboard thread on his death was pretty much nothing but weird (and of course angry) rants about how he was an atheist and is now in hell.

Object lesson on how the fundamentalists deal with out of the box ideas.

They don't.
They are stuck in family paradigm. Defending the faith as well as inquisitors.

Steven Hawking was an inspiration, and so brilliant to listen to, even on simple interviews. You simply couldn't hear him without having more of an awareness of humanity, and how beautiful and small we are.

Guess the poli board is taking the day off from bitching about monuments coming down.

Great guy. And proof that if you put your mind to it you can still accomplish great things even with disability.

The welfare queens should take note

This is a serious non troll question:

Would he be respected as a once in a lifetime genius like he is today if he didnt have ALS?

I honestly have no clue as the science and everything is so over my head

Was his actual science as smarts so transcendent he would have been wildly popular like he was even without ALS, or would he have just been a very smart person known in the small science community?

Stephen Hawking was a clue on jeopardy today...the episodes are filmed at least several weeks prior to air date, so it's quite a coincidence.

He is one of the most brilliant minds in history, so it’s likely he would have had some level of fame, but no. Nothing like he is without the ALS
