Yeah, I live in Florida. If you don't have a boat, your outdoor activities are sitting in the sand on the beach.
No hiking (none worth a damn), no lakes, a couple places to float on the bayou, but that's about it. I'd have Florida far down the list. Of the states I've lived in or spent extensive time in, I'll go:
1. California
2. Vermont
3. North Carolina
4. Louisiana
5. Florida

Sorry, but alabama is much more diverse than Louisiana from an outdoors perspective.
Mountains and valleys in the north and sugar white sand beaches on the coast. The only state that can make that claim.
Alabama has the longest canoe/kayak River trail in the country. A large cave system. A brackish delta. Whitewater Rapids. It's really not even close.
Louisiana has superior fishing. That's it. For me, that's all Id really care about, but all things being equal, Alabama is one of the most diverse states in the country in relation the outdoors.

Except for 5 months out of the year..
I dislike California politics but it is the best in terms of outdoors and is the only state in tier 1, unless you're a hunter.

The meth problem is no more prevalent here than anywhere in the south. As far as incest, how could you even know that? It's not like they're marching in the streets. Not to mention, wtf does that have to do with outdoor activities?

These photos were all taken in Alabama. As far as diversity, Alabama is towards the top
You can surf fish in the morning, explore a cave around lunch, and hike up a mountain in the late afternoon. The only state on the gulf coast where you can do such a thing in one day

For like a day, you can camp year round in Tennessee. You may not want to for a day or two, but it doesn't stay very cold for very long.

North Carolina would probably be my pick of the best to represent the southeast. Got the better side of the Blue Ridge and a mix of stuff inbetween all the way to some nice beaches. Probably closest to top 5 you will get in the south.

Looking at a previous list, South Dakota is at least Tier 3. Between some of the best hunting and fishing in the midwest, the Black Hills, the Badlands, outdoor activities in both summer and winter, easily ranks it on par with Montana. Montana does have the Rockies but SoDak makes up for that with its Missouri River Reservoir system and the world's best pheasant hunting.
Bottom line, depending on which outdooor activity trips your trigger that is which state you will enjoy most.
