Ask a Texan about property taxes there.

Give it up. They will just raise another tax to compensate.

Exactly. I don't know why this is some utopian idea. Tax revenues will still come in the same. It is a shell game.

I agree with this but Texans get smoked on property taxes. Back of the napkin math says it’s about a wash for me.

What are they going to replace it with? Both Republican and Democrat administrations have had BIG issues with spending. They have to replace it with something.

Ole John is about to face an untimely demise by saying such incredibly intelligent things like this.

Try Tennessee as a better example. My property taxes here are the same as they were for my house in Houston in 2007, and it's worth 4x as much. Also less than we were paying for property taxes in BR (2012-2016) for a house worth less than half as much. Just reset the entire state budget like Tennessee did, put no income tax in the state constitution along with requiring a balanced budget, and start over. It's the only way. Nothing will fall apart - a bunch of freeloading government workers will whine, that's about it.

Louisiana quite literally is a “welfare state”.

THAT and corruption is our problem. Always has been.

In my experience this is a misconception. I lived in TX for a decade in 3 different houses/cities. Property taxes differ by county, and I never thought they were high.

It appears that the high tax counties are run by democrats… who would have thunk?

TN had a tax on investment income for a while, but they eventually eliminated it.

TX amended its state constitution to prohibit both a personal income tax and any form of "wealth tax" like some states (and a particular Presidential candidate) is proposing.

I don't know if FL ever had one.

It's what he's not saying that bothers me. The state won't get rid of it unless it requires more taxes elsewhere. Sales, property, higher state fees, elimination of the homestead exemption, etc.

Hell they refuse to do away with the damn $10 vehicle inspection sticker.

It's insanely expensive to live in Louisiana compared to other places.

Not sure if you've ever looked at costs in the NE or West Coast.

Example: Maryland has a state income tax up to 5.75%. Every county has it's own, flat income tax that is typically 3.2%. Property tax for an average property of 1500 sqft in many areas is ~$7500+/yr. Sales tax is 6%. Transfer taxes are very high for real estate. State gas tax is 47 cents/gallon. Home insurance is typically reasonable at $1500 to 2000/yr but car insurance is the highest in the country at $1500/yr.

Without question, Louisiana is cheaper than many states. Though there are many, many variables and priorities to consider.

I don't think a 4.25% income tax is the reason why Louisiana's population has not grown.

Me neither. But as someone else said, it’s a start.

I’m in Texas. No state income tax but property taxes are high. One way or another, government will get it’s piece.

With no funding, who Will clean your ditches and take care of you. No one needs government assistance more than a Louisiana citizen.
