St. Tammany deputies seize $367,000 hidden in car after stop

ST. TAMMANY – A car driven by a Mexican resident was carrying just over $367,000 in cash hidden in a floor compartment that was apparently targeted for a drug transaction, according to the sheriff’s office.
On Saturday, Dec. 1, the sheriff’s office said it made a traffic stop on a vehicle and upon a search with a K-9 named Echo, found $367,680 and a loaded gun inside the vehicle.According to the sheriff’s office, the driver, Jose Isabel Brito Jimenes, a resident of Mexico, said he was traveling from Houston and had no knowledge of the hidden currency.
A second vehicle and other people were located nearby and said to be related to the suspected planned transaction of money for drugs.
The following individuals were booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail for L.R.S. 40:979 Attempt and Conspiracy to distribute or with intent to distribute Schedule 1 Narcotics :LINK

I get this was drug money, no way it wasn’t, but unless they can actually tie it to a crime those police have no business taking it.

Yes. That is a lot of money.
But what does it cost to have multiple interdiction officers sitting on the highway all year, how much are their Tahoes, how much do those K-9's cost? Do they even break even?
Could those Deputies be out on Patrol stopping local crime?

I would love to hear what the basis of the conspiracy charge is if all they found was money. While it is obviously drug money the government shouldn’t be able to seize money without a crime having been committed.
