I get irrationally pissy when I hear of some big donation going towards a political cause, or something like “fighting hunger” in a place where 50% of people are obese.

You’re right about that being irrational. A well placed political donation is the single most effective donation for alleviating human suffering. A well run society would shed more money for cancer research than St Jude would ever think of spending.

Just think if enough people had combined resources to prevent the Communists from taking over Russia, or Hitler.

I’ve never heard of Morgan’s Wonderland. Thanks for the suggestion. While so many of us should, and do, support the big name places like St Jude and Shriners, there are many small charities doing work just as important. I appreciate you sharing the name of one such place. For me, it helps to have a recommendation from someone.

Has anyone ever found how much St Judes brings in on a yearly basis? I’ve looked here and there and never really found a round about number.

About $1.3 billion in direct donations. More if you include events and money people leave in wills. Total about $2.3B once you factor in things like the insurance claims they file.

I've been donating monthly since 2006 (your post had me go back and look).

I can't think of a better charity.

I like American Cancer and Big Oak Ranch too.

St Jude Dream Home

Fun fact: The first Dream Home was given away Shreveport in the early 90’s.

Cheers to Dr. Donald Mack, Sr., the first one to organize it- the one who made Dream Homes a thing what a legacy he left for children and families across the country.

If yall are in the Lafayette area and have Facebook (yeah I know) we have a group called Sunflowers for St. Jude!!! that has information about our sunflower field. 100% of donations go to St. Jude.

We plant it every year and it’s pick your own style — make a donation of what you wish when you visit.

Here’s to year 8 and Mother Nature playing nice so they’ll be beautiful!!

We are! Kaplan to be exact. My husband plants them for us but rice has to get planted first.

They’re typically ready in July and we try to have a fall field as well. Sometimes it works and others it does t just depending on hurricanes. Laura wiped out our second field and I legit went to say bye to the field and actually cried. I’m such a sap.

I love saying hi to our visitors!!! We want people to know there is a face with the project and we’re legit.

Last year KATC did a brief story and we had visitors like crazy .. the parking area was packed which was a beautiful sight to see.

.91 of Red Cross

There is no way, lol. The people doing the verification of this stat must be very pro-Red Cross.
quote:

The American Red Cross has been accused of misusing funds raised for Haiti earthquake relief. The accusations include:
-Misrepresenting how funds were spent: The Red Cross allegedly claimed to have provided housing to more than 130,000 people, but only built six permanent homes.
-Diverting funds for personal gain: The Red Cross allegedly misspent funds on executive salaries and other administrative overhead.
-Failing to rebuild critical infrastructure: The Red Cross allegedly failed to rebuild homes, schools, and hospitals.
-Exploiting the disaster: The Red Cross allegedly exploited the disaster and misled donors.

The Red Cross is a textbook example of how it takes years to build a good reputation and a very short time to destroy it.

The Red Cross is known to be reckless with their spending on executive salaries and I believe The Wounded Warrior Project is as well. Both have been accused of having exec meetings in lavish locations and paying administrators hefty salaries. The United Way used to be sponsored by the NFL until it was revealed less than 50% of donations were actually utilized and the NFL dropped them fast.

St. Jude's is an extremely worthwhile charity.

St Jude’s is great,I used to donate to them but I have switched to Shriner’s.
St Jude’s gets massive and donations,Shriners doesn’t get as many donations and they do great work also.
