My theory is that the priesthood has always attracted gay men because it is a job that is respectable and they don't have to constantly answer questions about why they don't marry. The sometimes theatrical aura of ceremony clinches it.

Two thoughts come to mind.
1. Some of these priests chose that life in part due to a conflict between their faith and personal sexual preference. They had this conflict since an early age and decided to double down on their religion by becoming a priest and becoming celibate.
2. Ease of access.

A lot of priests are gays that can't come out because their families are Catholic and would ostracize them if they did.
ETA: and it's not like they can just go to a bar and pick up a random dude to bone, especially in smaller cities and towns almost everyone would know who the priest is. Can't try to put a move on another priest, because what if he's straight? So, they have access to altar servers, and they choose the boys because they are gay.

Gay conspiracy, they hate that homosexuality is condemned by the Church, so you get 50 of your 6 million gay population to be priests and destroy from within.

Alter Boy - Easy to control. Parents have always taught them that the church is sacred.
