The Steve Gleason documentary. I forget if it has a different name but it was just brutal. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the entire theater.

Better ones have been mentioned but I’ll throw out Gone Baby Gone.

Affleck made the right decision but it’s gut wrenching and cost him the love of his life and I take the ending to mean that he’s going to spend the next 13 years being the girl’s sole guardians of atone for his decision.

Not the ending but if you have children and you watch Rabbit Hole it will take a lot out of you.

The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1968, starring Alan Arkin).

A deaf mute enters society again after being institutionalized. He visits the institution to see his buddy but is coldly informed that he is dead and buried.

The deaf mute commits suicide. The movie ends with people he touched during his time that he seemed to establish a life (but was too grief-stricken) visiting his grave.

Fandango

To use a Russian word I just learned (thanks Kafka): the final scene is very toska.

Took my wife to see Love Story on maybe our first or second date. We were waiting in the lobby when the previous showing ended and every lady in the exit was dabbing their eyes. Some were absolutely bawling. Seeing this, my thought was, "Oh shite, what have I gotten myself into?" I was ok, but the wife bawled at the ending. Thankfully I gave her comfort. 50 years have passed and she still puts up with me, so I guess it worked.

Made the mistake of watching this one night when I couldn’t sleep. I cried like a baby and that was before I had a child of my own. Do yourself a favor and never watch this!!!

saddest movie ending

My Life with Michael Keaton. Not the ending per se, but whole movie for me (that I can remember) made me cry at various points.

Saving Private Ryan as well.

Interesting premise. Will have to watch it.

This is the way everyone describes it: it’s the greatest movie you’ll ever see that you’ll never want to watch again. It is a masterpiece, but holy shite it’s tragic.
