Spinoff Thread: Do you usually check a bag when flying?

My wife (no pics) and I usually check a bag. We mostly flew Southwest. The downside of checking a bag is having to wait at baggage claim and the chance that your luggage gets left behind/lost/etc.
I don't fly very often, but it also seems to me that most people are just going with carryons. I notice getting on and off the plane because you have to wait for everyone to stow their stuff and then get it after landing. Not a big deal, mostly just an observation.
For those who don't check bags, is just to aviod the wait at bagge claim and fees? Or just want your stuff with you?
Anyway, if most people opt not to check a bag, is there a more efficient way we can fly with luggage? Maybe better boarding procedures?
Thank you for wasting your time on my post.

Alone = No
With family (wife, three minis) = too many bags, strollers, car seats

Never, unless perhaps a long trip to Europe or something.

Only when flying with golf clubs.

We usually fly business class to Europe and I take one piece of checked luggage while my wife packs like she's going on a six month safari.

Ideal trip for me is I only have carryon. Much faster leaving the airport on arrival. Also, no chance for the airline to lose my stuff although with tracking these days it seems less likely of happening.

I usually don't. My wife spent over a decade as a flight attendant (nopics) and showed me how to pack a week's worth of clothes into a roller board (the main trick is rolling the clothes into tight rolls instead of packing them flat).
Both, but they both add up to "far less hassle". I already have my ticket on my phone so when I get to the airport I just go straight to security without having to first wait in line to check bags. When I reach my destination, I just walk out instead of needing to wait on bags.
If you're having to fly with checked bags, you're having to fly with checked bags. Anything else to make the trip easier (TSA Pre-check, exit row or higher-class seating, etc) is not going to involve your luggage.

If I owned an airline all bags would have to be checked, no carry-ons allowed. It's a pain in the asz waiting for people to get all their carry-ons gathered and off the plane. However, I probably wouldn't stay in business long because everyone has carry-ons. ????

About 50/50 depending on the length of the trip. I also carry a backpack for books, chargers, laptop, etc. that I store below the seat in front of me.
I will also gladly let them check my bag at the gate before I scramble for overhead storage.

I think people heard that savvy travelers use carry ons…so they use carry ons…like complete idiot assholes. Everyone has three bags full of shite they don’t need, with a stupid neck pillow and a gaggle of electronics.

I do everything I can to carry on. I flew to a wedding last year and had my shite packed perfectly, only for TSA to take it all out to make sure my shoes didn’t have a bomb inside the sole. Then they couldn’t get all back in.

I try not to. I hate waiting to get my bag at baggage claim. It can take an hour sometimes. I've always learned that I don't even wear half the stuff I bring. I also try to stay at places with a washer and dryer or have a place nearby to drop off clothes for them to wash. Paying $20 for someone to wash and fold your clothes is cheaper than $40 both ways to check-in luggage.

I do most of the time.
I'm typically not in an insane rush, watching people dicking around with the overhead bins stresses me tf out, there's nothing in my bag I can't replace or wait on, and I like to board as close to last as possible.

Airlines started charging for checked bags. That's what precipitated the rise in carry-on usage.
For a short trip (weekend), I would generally just carry on. Longer than that or if travelling with the wife and kids, we don't need to negotiate 4 carry on bags so we'll check one or two. We have car seats as well so there isn't really any time savings.

I sit in the front of the plane but wait until last to get off so I can check out everyone's arse when they are leaving and do a proper rating.

Traveling for work, carry-on only. I can't afford for my stuff not to make it with me.
Domestic vacation/personal travel, carry-on only going. Sometimes check bags for convenience on way back.
International travel, carry-on only going. Checked only bags coming back only if I buy something that I can't take in a carry-on.

If I’m flying alone then I try my best to not check a bag.
It’s not really the money, I just want to go through security, get on the plane, get off at my destination and walk out the terminal. I try to make my life as simple as possible.
