Beer mats and matchbooks. I have those from restaurants and bars all over the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and South America.

When I worked and traveled in the 90's, I collected first class airline blankets , and salt/pepper shakers. Still use the lap sized blankets.

When I cleaned house several years ago to de-clutter, I tossed almost every souvenir I had. Once I looked at them for a few minutes and recalled how I acquired the thing, that was good enough for me. My kids don’t want piles of stuff that doesn’t mean anything to them.
Now that I'm retired, I've done similar. Unless it has monetary value, then no one else except me gives a shite. If you aren't going to display it, get rid of it. Otherwise, it just takes up space, and someone else will eventually have to dispose of it.

Diner style coffee mugs and stickers for the garage beer fridge. Usually just those two things.
Maybe a hat or tshirt if I like one.

I found Cretaceous shark teeth in a small creek bed in north Mississippi. I've found several old rectangular nails that were between 80-120 years old. Ive also found dozens of old beer cans and bottles dating as far back as the 1960s.
I collected a piece of the structure of Alcatraz in 2001.
My grandfather found a section of a spinal column from a prehistoric animal in Germany in 1944 or '45. Probably Pleistocene or Holocene.

Stickers. I have a metal cooler shaped like a VW van that I stick them on.
I do everything I can to avoid a checked bag, so space is limited.

When I was trucking I'd pick up a rock about the size of your head, from each state. Brought them home and created a rock garden. Now that I'm retired, it's fridge magnets and business cards from the different restaurants where I eat. Problem now is hardly anyone has business cards.

I bought one on my kids a t shirt when I was Spain that had bulls on it with each wearing a letter on their shirt that spelled out BULLSHIRT.
I was told she could not wear a shirt like that at daycare.

Generally not much of a souvenir guy, but I do have a wall of soccer scarves from some of the countries I visited which I do treasure.

I acquired some typical souvenirs from many places that are no where to be found anymore in my home. However, 3 things from long ago have stayed with me through many decades regardless of where I have lived.: A beautiful mountain stream weathered, somewhat large, rock picked up from a stream while descending Mt. Le Conte in the Smokies Mountains. An ivy plant cutting from Esrnest Hemingway's courtyard in Key West that I have kept alive as a normal house plant for 35 years now. And to my delight, a twisted Hickory walking stick that I used countless times hiking in the Appalachian, Smokies, Rockies, Tetons, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and British Columbia in my younger days. This Moses type staff has now become my preferred walking aid that I use whenever I need to walk some distance on uneven terrain even in So. La. due to some balance issues that now affect me in Senior life! Even with it's weathered look from some of the scratches acquired mountain hiking over the years, I still get folks wanting to see it up close and complementing me about it when I use in public. These are among the types of souvenirs that can become treasures.
