I never said bank on at all either. You join these groups to establish networks. It's networking like in anything else, and it could lead to a foot in the door or an opportunity somewhere that you may have not known if unless you had the network.

I think it's wholly bad advance to tell someone not to network. Work hard, get good grades, be innovative, and network and then everything else should play out well on his/her end.

Yeah, to be honest in hindsight I wish I would have just applied for the BS EE program at Southern.

However there are a few reasons why I went for MS.

1) The standard Financial Aid policy is that a student who has an Bachelors degree can only get 45 hours of credit to get a 2nd Bachelors. At the time I did not know if my credits would transfer to SU (fortunately they did so thankful to God)

2) The specialization of Materials in my MS program is something very interesting and I would not mind possibly working in this field.

Make no mistake, I do not expect to make ALOT more money just because I have MS, I want to do it since I am interested.

However I have no issue with standard EE jobs.

I get what your trying to say. Personally I felt that attending an HBCU did not really matter because I am already Black.

I will face discrimination regardless of going to a HBCU or PWI (which ironically I have been to both).

I have not graduated but so far La Tech seemed to be more difficult. However difficulty is irrelevant if you factor in internships require certain GPA and networking to make relevant contacts.

As far as I know, no employer cares how much harder one public institution teaches over another. This is evident by the number of grads in public universities getting similar jobs at the same companies.

I agree with the NSBE downvote here, it's interpreted as a statement, rightly or wrongly that scares off some legitimately otherwise color-blind organizations. You don't need it and, frankly, we (society) don't need it.

So it's better to join a group for black engineers than a group for all engineers? You think it's better networking to limit how many people you associate with? Does it sound like he wants a job because he's black, or because he's an engineer? Your reality is so fricking skewed man. Maybe I'm greedy, but I wouldn't even consider taking a job for minimum wage. I got offered $9 at my current job. I straight up said it wasn't enough, and the lady immediately said $13. I told her I wanted $15 because it wouldn't be worth the drive across the causeway for less. She called back 10 minutes later and said that worked.

Every engineer we've ever hired coming out of school with a Southern degree has been woefully unprepared. And most of these kids were not dumbassess... they're just not prepared...at all... to enter the workforce. Sad.

I remember back in the 90's, 5 or 6 of my classmates (LSU) went over there to take dynamics and all of them, yes all... made 100%'s on every test. WTF?
