A good friend just got back his LSAT score and is curious if he should go ahead and apply to Southern, or wait to re-take the test in December and then apply.

His score is the average LSAT for Southern. Problem is, he also has the average GPA, so two average scores won't exactly put him over the edge.

I think he should apply, but only if he knows they understand he is re-taking it and will consider his new score as well when he receives it. However, in that case maybe he should just wait and see what his new score is in January.

Does Southern average LSAT scores? I think LSU did when I started, but that was years ago.

I know the OT is ripe with invaluable insight to all things Louisiana law and Louisiana lawyers.

Any recommendations from Southern grads?

I don't mean to be a douche, but if your LSAT is sub 145, you probably shouldn't have the option of going to law school at this point

If his LSAT and GPA are both "average", why does he think law school is for him?

Southern is usually for people who fricked around in undergrad but are otherwise pretty sharp, and that is reflected in LSAT scores.

If he's average in both GPA and LSAT, maybe he should think about something else.

I know three people who went to Southern that are doing well now. But.....they had jobs lined up with family or friends before graduating. Would be much harder without that

That's interested. A good friend of mine did okay during undergrad at LSU in Poli Sci. Had a decent LSAT score. Got into and went Southern for law school. Now he is a partner of a firm in his home town and is kind of a baller.

So, respectfully, I disagree with you.

I graduated from Southern last May, passed the bar the first time and have a well paying job.

Your friend will do fine in law school even with an "average" LSAT score. He just needs to know that he is going to have to put the work in to make it. He can't expect to breeze through and come out in the end with a well paying job. Gonna have to bust arse.

Coming from a SULC grad and just as a lawyer - if he is borderline tell him to find something else to do. Exxon pays way better than what 95% of grads from any Louisiana law school are going to make.

I did not enjoy my time at SULC. As an institution, its too closely connected to the main campus. Which is an unmitigated disaster. Some of the admin/faculty are good people who know what they are talking about. Some have no clue.

The pervasive idea that law school or practicing law is some noble, prestigious endeavor only for the smartest of the smart makes me roll my eyes so hard it hurts.

It's just a job. Get over it, Atticus Finch.

The LSAT and the Bar Exam may be some of the more worthless indicators of any actual ability to practice law.

I can agree with this. There are a few professors that really shine, however. As for the law school administration, they were awful.

The problem is that there just ain't that many of those jobs out there anymore.

Queue more anecdotal stories about someone's friend who went to SULC and is now making baller money. Almost non of which are true and those that are true aren't the whole story (i.e. Family connection coming through)

im not worried about him making it through if he gets in. He has great work ethic and will be just as competent a real, working attorney as anyone.

I just don't know if It's better for him to apply now with a 143 or wait until he's re-taken it in December.

Does Southern do rolling admissions? Will they suspend acting on his application until his new score comes in?

These are the questions for the SULC attorneys who graduated recently and know about the inner-workings of their school.

I've never even stepped foot on Southern's campus. I heard they have a live Jaguar though, kinda like to see that.

143

Did he even study? His only option is to re-take it. Even if he got in somewhere, that is a terrible score and he will be severely limiting himself. With the way law school admissions are now, if he can take a Kaplan course or something and add 10-15 points to his score, he could VASTLY improve his options. Hell, with a 160 he would have a shot at getting into Tulane or someplace like that.

I honestly don't even know if you could get into Southern with a 143.

Well according to the data I've seen a 143 is SULC's average score.

He will end up practicing in Louisiana, so Southern is fine for him. Looks like it's the cheapest of all the schools, and he could live in Baton Rouge. Besides, not that he could necessarily get in, but he has no desire to go to school in NOLA or out of state.

Southern has worked out for most everyone I know who went there. Besides, a law degree just lets you check a box on the bar exam. That's the great equalizer.
