This is the kind of day where there may be 3 tornadoes within 40 miles but if one of them doesn’t plow through the middle of their kid’s school mouth breathers will be saying “I can’t believe they dismissed early just for this, meteorologists missed it again!!”

I never understood this. Yeah Tornadoes don't have a widespread impact like a flood or a hurricane. But they can be very deadly and extremely violent for localized areas.

There have been tornadoes that hit populated areas in Louisiana just in the past few years, including Chalmette/New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Ruston, and New Roads. It absolutely can and does happen here. You and your kids would be safer inside of a house or building than you would in a car or bus.

They know the conditions are favorable for them, and at the very least there will be strong straight line winds and heavy rain w/ flash flooding. If you can avoid being in a car during evening rush today, you absolutely should.

The everyone is over reacting until these weather events screw me over specifically is not the attitude to have.

I understand being skeptical of "experts", especially after Covid and the 2020 election.

But it doesn't cost anyone but a little time and money to make sure you have child care arranged and aren't commuting on our horrible road network when there is flash flooding or high winds.

Looks like some public and private schools in Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana are having early dismissal today at various times along with Baton Rouge, Livingston, Ascension, St. James, and Iberville.

Supposed to have flash flooding and high winds right around when buses would normally hit the road.

EBR is winging it with a normal schedule at least for now, just canceling after school activities.

quote:

Some Baton Rouge-area schools will dismiss early or close Monday due to the storm forecast.

Ascension Public Schools announced in a Facebook post that schools will be released early and all after-school activities canceled Monday. Middle schools will be dismissed at 11 a.m. and primary schools at noon. All offices will close at 1 p.m. High school students, who were already off on Monday, are not scheduled to return to class until Tuesday, the post said.

The Ascension school system cited the weather forecast and a possibility of high winds as reasons for early dismissal: "We understand the importance of maintaining a safe environment for our students, and this decision has been made with their safety as our top priority."

East Baton Rouge Parish School System said in a news release that after-school activities will be canceled Monday. All schools will continue to follow regular schedules and dismissal times, the school system said.

Livingston Parish Public Schools will follow a half-day schedule on Monday and cancel after-school activities, the school system said in a Facebook post. Parents and students can check their school's early dismissal time here.

St. James Parish School System issued a similar statement, with all after-school activities canceled.

High schools in St. James Parish will dismiss at 10:45 a.m. and elementary schools at 11:30 a.m., the school system said. All offices will close at noon. Classes will resume with normal schedules on Tuesday.

Iberville Parish School Board also announced an early dismissal.

IAPPS will release at 10:15 a.m. White Castle High School, MSA West High School, North Iberville Elementary and High Schools, MSA East, Plaquemine High School and Crescent Elementary will be released at 10:30 a.m., the school board said.

Dorseyville Elementary, MSA West Elementary, Iberville Elementary and East Iberville will be released at 11:30 a.m.

Also, Monday's Iberville Parish School Board meeting is canceled, the school board said.

Assumption Parish schools and offices will be closed, with after-school activities canceled, the school system said.

Holy Family School in Port Allen will dismiss at 11 a.m., with all after-school activities cancelled. Buses will run, the school announced, noting that West Baton Rouge Parish public schools are still on Christmas break.

All of Southern University's Baton Rouge campuses will shift to remote operations beginning at 1 p.m. on Monday, with normal operations resuming on Tuesday.

Baker school system will be dismissing at noon on Monday.

Zachary Community School District also canceled classes and after-school activities on Monday.

"Out of an abundance of caution and to ensure the safety of our students and staff, all schools in the Zachary Community School District will be closed tomorrow, Monday, January 8th," the school system said. "The forecasted heavy rains and high winds have the potential to dangerously impact the transportation of our students and staff."

Seems like central Alabama gets jealous of other nearby areas getting all the attention, thus, I'm fully anticipating at least a tornado watch around here tomorrow night

I think they sometimes over-rate the chances of severe weather areas where there is spotty radar coverage.

In my area, anything that flirts with being radar indicated at 5,000+ feet is going to get warned even if it's not an actual touchdown because they can't see low enough to be certain. Yet another piece of infrastructure that Louisiana lacks.

I think they often under report the level of tornado activity at the coast because they can’t easily distinguish a waterspout from a tornado until it makes landfall.

A tornado warning on Lake Ponchatrain for a waterspout might not even get a thunderstorm warning in Mobile or Pensacola because it’s less likely to cause damage on land.

I’ve seen numerous waterspouts cause light damage that never gets talked about because they were never warned.

The unique element today for the coast is that it’s rare to see the supercell activity they get in C AL or MS and that sounds like what’s in store for the I10 corridor today.

Explain it to me like I am not a meteorologist. What are the chances of us getting a good blow in central Mississippi?

It's been a while since they had a setup like this so far south. It happens, but it's fairly rare.

Definitely a good day to turn the silent function off on your phone and be aware of those chances of heavy storms.

Everyone is going to have strong gradient winds (non-thunderstorm winds) later today/tonight, along with quite a bit of rain. The main severe weather threat in Mississippi will likely be over the southern 1/3 of the state.

Probably wouldn’t recommend it, at least not this afternoon/evening when the winds start to pick up.

Guys, we have to shut this thread down. HeadSlash doesn’t like us talking about severe weather unless there are multiple EF-5 tornadoes ongoing at the same time.

They are moving the radar site to a different location. Moving it from Slidell to Hammond. It’s expected to return to service in March.
