Don’t live in BR or Louisiana, have only been in BR twice. Seems kinda similar to the Shelby County Municipal Schools vote that happened roughly 10 years ago in the Memphis suburbs.

Unincorporated area wants more say over their affairs (mainly schools.). East Baton Rouge mode of government is that the mayor of BR is president of the county/parish.

Said mayor and leadership tells unincorporated area to get bent when they make requests. If they want it, make their own town.

St George makes that town.

It’s the result of the Baton Rouge city-parish leadership poorly handling a large portion of the population who get they were being treated unfairly.

I lived there during the early attempts at a school district. The very dismissive way it was all handled even by kip were key instigating factors in my opinion

That little boner you’re feeling right now... you know what is? That’s freedom.

And a note to add to this-

This started as an attempt to get an Independent School District and they were told to get a city first by the state legislature.

One of the legislators who told them that? Sharon Westin Broome, current mayor of BR.

Oops.

That area wanted their own school district since the EBR district is fricked worse than an orgy of squirrels.

They were told no and they had to create a city first.

So they did.

A new city formed so the residents can get better free shite in the form of a public school than they get now.

I don't live there but am glad to see it passed.

And completely true.

If you win the lottery and get into magnet schools, it is good. But playing the lottery with your kids’ future is completely insane.

Can someone explain to me, an outsider, why the governor appoints a mayor instead of having an election like it's fricking America?

rough summary

1. there was a desegretation order that destroyed the public schools in EBR parish

2. at the same time, it became effectively illegal for the city of BR to incorporate the affluent, white areas in the SE corner of the parish b/c it would dilute the black vote of the parish and violate various civil rights acts

3. the government is a city-parish government tha consolidates power among 1 board/executive. the CITY of baton rouge got a chunk of money every year for its CITY budget from taxes taken out of the unincorporated area.

4. eventually the deseg order was lifted and SEEBR could, theoretically, get an ISD or new, neighborhood schools. EBR refused and flippantly told them they needed a city before an ISD

5. due to 3 and 4, the unincorporated area wanted to create a new city, which is StG

The governor-appointed mayor serves until an election is held.
