Sometimes they do work, but don't produce enough, and formula is used as a supplement. Humans throughout history have this problem, for 99.9% of human history, women all shared breast feeding duties among the tribe/village regardless of whose actual child it was. Wet nurses, etc.

My wife (no pics) breastfed our kids but daughter refused to nurse after 10 months. Our pediatrician recommended not starting cows milk until age 1. We were OT poor then and I remember going through couch cushions trying to find enough change to buy formula. Then we found out some doctors said it was ok to switch to cows milk at 10 months.

We use the same similac formula to supplement breast milk, and I have also noticed it being harder and harder to find. Luckily baby is almost a year old so we can start mixing regular milk with breast milk, but I do not envy the parents out there with smaller infants. Other brands cause our baby to spit up.

I mean, even 3 generations ago it was fairly common for babies to die in infancy.
Peanut allergy? The baby just died.
Mom can't produce milk? The baby died.
Baby coming out arse first? Mom and baby died.
