How long does the unemployment run? 16 weeks? That's longer than the PPP money will run. These don't sound like career minded employees. I don't think the long run calculation is cut and dry, and I don't think these are long term thinking employees anyway.

I'm guessing it's probably a bunch of massage therapists and the like who probably lack the skills of finding much else.

I think this is very common. I know people/ employers dealing with it. People are making substantially more on unemployment through the end of July.

No wonder everyone on Reddit is screaming for the lockdown to continue for as long as possible.

They aren’t wrong. My daughter could’ve stayed on unemployment and made more after she was laid off at a CBD store, but she went to work at a grocery store instead.

What would be the rest of the story? That they want to go back to work and she is lying?

Use the money to pay herself and whoever else makes more than unemployment. Use the money to cover rent, benefits, etc that it allows. Pay the rest back. Once they get the ok to open, tell employees they have to show up or they are fired. No more UE benefits.

My wife is getting 60% pay from her employer to not work and they've said any taking that program could file for unemployment and they would not fight it. If we were to take the unemployment she would be making more by not working than she did when working.

We aren't taking the unemployment on principle. We can get by just fine on 60% of her check and 100% of mine, especially in this scenario where we aren't eating out a lot, buying little knick-knacks hither and yon, etc.

Do they get the same amount of Unemployment if they quit compared to being laid off?

They should get zero. (Barring a case where a person quit instead of doing something illegal)

All Congress had to was insert one damn sentence in the bill to prevent this.

"Expanded unemployment benefits cannot exceed the average weekly earnings".

They don't want people to work. It's insane.

So she has a really dumb crew of people working for her that doesn't realize unemployment benefits don't run forever?

They run until the end of July, and at that point, they figure they will be hired back because they think the owner will be desperate for help.

Good Lord. If that's what the Spa churns out, she needs to really consider just shuttering and taking the money to Costa Rica.

come June or July when these unemployment benefits stop...they're going to be a lot of people looking for jobs

If I was an employer my first questions would be aimed at finding out if they were unemployed in the last few months just to get the increased benefits. Immediate red flag if so.

Would they qualify for unemployment if they quit?
Nope. Also won't qualify if they get fired for no show, that's considered a voluntary quit too.
