I don't disagree completely, but people in the 60's-80's didn't always take on the "normal" family roles either.

It's more than just social media and Iphones.

In case you missed it there have been wars on for the last 20 years. Sure, a smaller percentage of the population have participated but many of us were there.

Both are means to an end. The issue is ease of access to new information. Once a malignant seed is planted in a young persons brain via "computer in the pocket", it can harvest and grow. Decipher this how you may.

But what most people miss in this discussion is that those TV shows like "Leave it to Beaver" and "Ozzie and Harriet" were intended to be "ideals" that we could all strive for.

Maybe somewhat, but a bigger reason they were portrayed that way is because plot lines closer to reality wouldn't have gotten approval by the networks because it wouldn't have flown with American viewers.

I forget who coined this phrase, but for many aspects of American life it rings true - "Who we are comes up so very short of who we believe ourselves to be."

There was a lot of bad stuff in society in the 50's and early 60's. The average American household didn't want to see it or face, and ignoring those problems was easier.

not necessarily, but you soyboys who have never faced any real hardhips are weak as frick. Our fathers and grand fathers were fighting the Hun and Japs. Or living thru the great depression. Or fighting on Hill 53. Or slogging thru jungles in Nam.

What challenges have you faced? Choosing Cable or Hulu? Oh the horror.

What about times in the 18-1900s when there wasn’t war going on? Were those generations just soy boys?

shite, there's a whole generation of us whose dads were military age in the 70's and 80's who didn't go to war.

Consider that your ideas of what is masculine and feminine have been shaped by that television show and other tropes repeatedly observed in modern culture.

It was never in our DNA. It was never nature’s law. There is no natural order being violated.

That's my question, though. Why did fathers take on the "masculine" role of breadwinning, and the mothers take on the "feminine" role of housekeeping, for thousands of years? Are they not biologically more suited to each?

There is nothing to “blame”.

I tried to steer clear of that part of it, because I knew that most of the board agrees that these changes have been bad, but a vocal minority wouldn't agree, and it would end up being a lowest-common denominator pissing match.

I'm not so much interested in whether it's good or bad, I'm just wondering why.

If I read this guys (tigerinthebueche) post right, he didnt even go to war, his dad did and he is taking credit for it somehow? Sounds pretty entitled but about right considering who is posting it.

I'm smoking too, excited about video games for once. Waiting on my borderlands 3 deluxe to arrive.

And now thinking how I wish Rockstar would produce a Back to the Future game on the GTA5 engine.

Marriage is useless in a mobile society.

Marriage law should have been written out of the law to not exist anymore.

abortion is legal in all cases and child support judgments are not in the law and don't exist

if this happened the day that the world wide web started society would be much better off.
