See that’s just an incorrect view of civilizations throughout history. In Ancient Greece for example, depending on which city-State you lived in your father may have had very little to do with your actual childhood, especially if you were a girl.
But other city-states were different. I would say the ones you’re talking about are exceptions, and maybe the period of 1960-2040 or so will turn out to be an exception as well. Kinda weird to think about.

The left played the long game of destroying the two parent Christian household and we are seeing the results

Baby boomers destroyed the fabric of society.

quote:Groucho was not complaining about respect, rather the very unrealistic portrayal of "7 year olds spouting bon mots that would do Noel Coward proud" (non-verbatim quote from reading Groucho's memoirs 20+ years ago).
That was covered under "respect for elders". I think it applies even if he didn't say "respect for elders, specifically in the realm of entertainment".

I agree with the premise that family values in many communities has changed greatly since the 50’s.
I disagree with the premise that what were considered family values in the 50’s were considered family values for the past several thousand years

Two income homes became more the norm starting with the 1960s feminist movements (but going back to WWII). This led to price increases and inflation as these newly formed two income homes became more the norm.
In recent times it's become a requirement for many people to have two incomes in order to sustain a middle class lifestyle and have a family. Both adults working changed much of the traditional roles of the relationship.

Then the post applies to one of the underlining topics of the thread (that older generations have always complained about younger) which your post appeared to me to be in support of. I just thought you were using Groucho to make the larger argument, rather than such a specific point. In any case, I'm not going to further defend a quote that was posted in agreement with you.

My grandpa used to make all his kids yell "HIPPIE-HIPPIE-HIPPIE!!!!" out the car windows whenever they passed a guy with long hair.

So what’s changed?
Mothers left the home, and went to work. Raising their children were left up to others, (daycare, preschool, etc.) when in the 70's and earlier mothers were home raising their own children. Teaching them family values, rights, and wrongs. Parents have so little time for their children, they miss them growing up. Except on the weekends. That is what changed.

quote:There was plenty of dysfunction back then. Normal people just weren't exposed to it. Is it worse now, sure, but it wasn't nearly as idyllic in the past as it's portrayed.
On the show, the parents are depicted fulfilling "traditional" roles which were pretty much the same for thousands of years.

quote:What has changed is that the betas are finally able to YELL loud enough to get their voices heard. So these other betas from other places are able to hear them and join in on the beta cause. Then you got the media who will do anything for a view, who will promote these beta freaks and then everyone else thinks that this is the norm since it is constantly being shown on the news.
So what’s changed?

Lol, so everyone should be miserable all the time so men can be 'strong' by your definition?
There was no "should" in his post. Just an observation on what seem to be cyclical events.

You mean the kids took their beatings in silence?
You fricking luddites are the worst.
