And there we have it. Social safety net. This is America today. It's the taxpayers fault you didn't pay $70 a month for flood insurance

Man, frick that. With Katrina it was over the news for months.

From what I'm hearing there's barely a peep right now.

We aren't a good enough headline so they don't give a tin shite about us.

Seriously? An entire major city in the US destroyed due to faulty federal protection vs a minor region.

I'm not saying it shouldn't get coverage, but don't expect Dan Rather to show up. It is the same as South Carolina last year.

What's sad is the New Orleans media isn't even covering it. It is mind numbing. I am getting my updates from here and family

fricked.

Family is staring 200k plus damage with no flood insurance. I mean if you're not close to a flood zone and your house hasn't flooded ever, why would you have it?

I have lived a couple of places in South Louisiana where I was not in a flood zone. I had flood insurance. You are crazy not to have it in South Louisiana. It costs peanuts if you are not in a flood zone.

So... You watched Katrina and Rita and Gustav and the March 2016 flooding but STILL thought you were immune? You honestly believe that there is anyplace in South Louisiana that is immune from flooding?

Do you enjoy a nice game of Russian Roulette in your spare time?

My parents are very poor and they used what little insurance money they got from losing everything in a fire in nbr 8 years ago to buy that trailer(cause no way could they afford a mortgage). Since then.....my dad was let go and now doesn't work (he's 68) and lives off his social security and what little money my mom and siblings make at their low wage jobs.

This is just a sad situation. I'm sorry.

We received about $4500.00 from fema and $280.00 from Red Cross..we had flood insurance. The folks that didn't have flood insurance was offered SBA loans and also had a road home option that bailed many folks out that didn't have flood coverage.
I think the road home ship has sailed.

I don't have flood insurance, and won't buy it. It would be akin to me buying a nuclear explosion policy. If I flood, all of yall are fricked.

There are many folks in this situation that I just don't understand why they didn't have policies though. I have in laws in this boat. When they make you build your house up 7 feet, that ought to tell you something. If you live in a neighborhood or subdivision, it seems like it would be mandatory. Too easy for drainage issues. Praying for those poor folks, and hopefully they will come out of it whole.

honestly I don't find much media coverage from anywhere (outside of BR). I checked cnn's site and among the five negative Trump headlines there was one about the flooding.

Thank you for your kind words. Im just trying to prepare for the worst with all this. My dad will fall apart if their home really is flooded so I will have to do what I can to help out any way I can from all the way in AZ. He has health issues and I really worry what a loss like this could do to his health.

My heart is breaking for my family and for everyone else I'm reading about that is facing severe damage. Now isn't the time for people to say "told ya so" in regards to flood insurance as well. Not when so many are suffering at the moment.

This...I'm in Covington and get the Nola news channels. There is no coverage of the flooding other than the normal regular scheduled news times which is unreal. You'd think, there would be more coverage.

Flood insurance is available to everyone. It's through citizen's.

agreed. Just like it wasn't the time after Katrina. Ironic that some of the same posters who questioned why anyone would live in New Orleans because it flooded are now dealing with floods

Or made all the jokes over the last decade.

Or rebuked people for rebuilding.

Or shite on people who dealt with Katrina.

Or make asses of themselves everytime floods are mentioned.
