Can someone tell me why they did this?

The book only ever specified that Hermione had brown eyes and frizzy hair. That could fit someone white or black.

Really? Appearance isn't an important piece of being a character?

What is important about the character of Hermione? She is an extremely intelligent quirky woman. That's it. If you can give an actually well thought out and articulated argument about why her race needs to be white then I'll concede you have a point. You haven't. You're just looking for a reason to exercise your persecution complex.

For an example of someone whose race is important, Othello's race is important. He needs to be different than the rest of the characters. An interesting interpretation of the play could call for a white actor, but the rest of the characters' race would also have to be switched because his being different is important.

This is not the case with Hermione. Her race is a minor point, and it does not affect the narrative at all.

When any production goes from one medium to another there is a certain amount of creative interpretation that goes into it. A screen play will never perfectly reflect a book, and a movie will never perfectly reflect a screen play. Every individual involved brings their own angle to it. Whether it's the director choosing shots and cuts or how an actor interprets a line being read. Think "this pretzel is making me thirsty" from Seinfeld.

These little changes such as the race of Hermione being different is just a part of the sum that makes each production a new creative product.

Everyone is focusing on the wrong issue. She's a character that's based on a fallacy.
I'm more concerned with the fact that her parents were dentists.

Everyone knows there are no dentists in Britain.

despite the last post i made pointing out that her race was specified, i do generally agree that i dont care. it was mostly a point of information if someone is pushing that it never was. ultimately, who cares, but yes it was.

I bet you complain about blacks not having a job, but when you see them working you complain because you want to see all white people. Pick a side.

You are basically arguing that race isn't a thing. So if they changed, why would it matter? Why would you take notice?

pretty sure that highlighted text is referring to her being scared over getting caught trying to free a horse bird beast that is about to get executed.

have you never heard the phrase "his/her face went white with fear"?

Ehh,wouldn't ashen be a better word for that? Or wan? Or about a dozen other words?

IDGAF what race the actress is, source material gets altered all the time when it changes medium but didn't Rowling have a pretty strong influence in the movie and we ended up with a white Hermione. Rowling just wants to jump in and stir the pot from time to time because she enjoys the attention but got called out on twitter by some white dude who is probably a racist and bullying and who know what else now.

I am arguing that the race of an actor or actress should not be a criterion for getting role for which race is not an issue.

Your inability to see the difference between characters and people is disturbing but not surprising.

Sure, but Rowling's strength as a writer has never been her flowery prose. If she tried to get fancy she'd probably end up purple.
