A tunnel under NOLA? We can keep surface roads from failing in the swamp we call land and we gonna drill deeper in it? Seems less than optimal

Isn’t his tunnel under Las Vegas basically a joke that nobody actually takes?

I would assume New Orleans just requested to be reviewed as possible candidate for the tunnel. There's several other places also trying to win the same thing.

They "won", It was already announced

It still has to go through all of the regulatory and exploratory stuff

Bedrock in LA coastal plains? That’s going to be one hell of a drill shaft.

Even his Nashville tunnel might be impossible due to limestone in the area. I really can't see how he can make a New Orleans tunnel.

I have no idea how people can take Elon seriously. He suggests everything from these stupid tunnels to traveling to Pluto to planting chips in everybody's brain. (Which would be really creepy if there were actually a chance of it happening.) He literally named one of his sons X. (It's bad enough that he renamed the platform X.)

Unfortunately, one side of the political aisle always loves his stupid suggestions, and the other side of the political aisle only complains about how he's supposedly "racist" and "transphobic". Nobody notices how ridiculous his suggestions are.

That's clearly the point

They are choosing areas that are challenging and diverse to prove (or see) if the tech on their new tunnelers works everywhere

I love that the OT is going to give advice to a guy who is literally launching and landing rockets.

I know the refineries have started offering education assistance but this board still seems a little under qualified.

You realize that at one time harnessing the power of lightning and bringing it into your home was looked at as a "ridiculous suggestion", right?

A tunnel under NOLA, at least the spray paint will be continually washed away by all the water flowing through it.

There are definite difficulties of tunneling in New Orleans, but it's not impossible.

There is a reason we don't tunnel in Louisiana. There is a reason the tunnels we have are being bypassed with Bridges. Tunnels suck in Louisiana. They are a maintenance nightmare.

Try digging a hole in a ditch during a rain storm. Now dig that whole horizontally 60' underground.

Nobody uses the tunnels he created and abandoned in Las Vegas. He promised a bunch of stations and autonomous vehicles traveling at high speed.

Instead they got one decent station, them a bunch of bus stops. Including a one way tunnel with paid drivers operating Teslas very slowly. Since it is one way and nobody uses it, ride waits can be long to travel very short distances.

Looks like he has abandoned the effort

Might have something to do with it.

Yet he's worth almost $1 trillion, and you, being so much smarter than him, is worth about $40.

Elon isn't the Mayor of Las Vegas.

Again, Musk creates a product. Not his fault that LV isn't providing the infrastructure to support his product.

You sure?

I just don’t see why they would build a launch facility when they have one in Brownsville and Florida.

Musk's boring company built the infrastructure... It was very poorly done. I mean at what point in the plan did they think a one way tunnel was a great idea

Is it falling apart? Poor quality?

That would be, again, an LV problem. Contractors provide a price to build a thing. Or, Contractors and Designers provide a price and a design to build a thing. It's up to government to approve/disapprove of those designs/price.
