Deer across North America are dying from a mysterious disease that gradually destroys the animals’ nervous systems.
And scientists are concerned that the infection could make its way to humans.
Chronic wasting disease — or “zombie deer disease” — was first observed in 1967 in Fort Collins, Colorado, and has since infected wild herds in 24 states and Canada, as well as in South Korea and Norway, NPR reported.
“CWD passes from animal to animal through prions, misfolded proteins that cause other proteins to misfold around them,” NPR reported. “Different prion diseases tend to only harm certain species, but can evolve to overcome those limitations.”
In some herds, as many as half of the animals carry prions.

Imagine if deer had to be eradicated how ape shite all the hunters would go if they got rid of tag limits. (obviously though once its all over, no more deer to hunt)

I’ve never heard it called zombie deer disease in my life. I’ve heard of CWD 20 years ago

My money is on the beavers.

CWD is pretty bad, we had a biologist come talk to us about it very recently. It’s not a virus and it’s non-bacterial, can only be destroyed at 1500 degrees F. It can be caught by humans in a similar form of Mad Cow disease. If a deer dies of it, it can stay in a plant for years as well.
This is the reason Game & Fish has been so serious in MS about not letting any out of state (CWD +) come in.

You telling me I can deer hunt and zombie hunt at the same time? Best news I've heard all day. Probably should have put this thread on the outdoor board.

Time to add a chainsaw bayonet to my rifle.

This sort of reminds me of the beginning to "28 Days Later".

That is the reason it is a huge fine to transport a live deer across state lines. They caught some guys in Tuscaloosa doing this last year and they hit them with huge fines.
One of my customers has a big deer farm here in Alabama and back 10-12 years ago he bought a trophy buck somewhere in the Midwest to use for breeding. Then they told him he couldn't bring the deer to Alabama.

Pretty sure there are 0 cases of CWD being transmitted to humans. Not sure where you got your info.

This is why I always boil my deer sausage before eating it.
