Even a snake didn’t break the focus of one U.S. military sniper in Alabama. While conducting a 1-173 Infantry training exercise, a southern black racer snake slid across the barrel of junior U.S. Army National Guard sniper Pfc. William Snyder's rifle. The exercise was performed at Eglin Air Force Base on April 7, according to the Alabama National Guard. Apparently, the sniper’s camouflaged ghillie suit even hid him from the unexpecting snake. “Our snipers are trained to remain perfectly still for hours on end when in position and remain invisible to enemies and even wildlife,” the Alabama National Guard wrote in a Facebook post.

It does seem like a pretty convenient time for the photographer to happen by.

It's a military flinch test.

Yeah, I thought snakes had thermal vision or something like that. Always assumed they see like we would see with a thermal camera. If that's the case, was the sniper manipulating his body temp to blend with his surroundings? Seems fishy.

How does he compensate for the pine straw that is in the middle of his scopes line of sight?

`Who took the photo? So someone was set up directly in front of a sniper and stayed immobile long enough for a snake to slither by without noticing he was there? That doesn't make any sense. Why would the sniper have stayed motionless for hours upon hours while a damn cameraman was walking around setting up equipment or looking for a shot around him? Whatever...Being a sniper is bad arse enough, no need to dress it up more by staging snakes slithering in front of your face.

Jason Bourne would have killed the snake without anyone ever noticing a thing. Amateurs.

There’s a joke to be made about the irony of, at the same instant, hundreds of miles away, a black snake was making the sniper’s wife flinch but I’d never go there.

In one of the books about Carlos Hathcock, the famous Vietnam sniper, it talks about how he could slowly work his way across an open area on the ground, seldom moving, to approach a target.

If an ant started biting his nuts, a mosquito landed in his eye, or a snake slithered in front of his face, he had to grit his teeth and bear it. Because if he moved around, he'd get shot.

The snake is so lucky he didn't get shot. Most other black snakes are not so lucky. Share with your friends. Start the conversation. Period.
