Yeah if a dark unmarked vehicle pulls me over and some dude in a generic "uniform" approaches, when I hadn't done anything obviously wrong, I would be on very high alert.

If this happens, don’t pull over. Drive the speed limit and immediately call 911 and let them know the situation. 911 will let you know if it’s an actual cop or not.

I've considered doing this for years, but it would be a pretty large undertaking. I was going to approach it from a data analysis angle, comparing police spending vs population, looking for rapid revenue growth, crime rates, things like that. And while all of this data should be publicly available, as this article points out some towns don't even have a budget, and even if they all did there is no standardized format that a program could digest easily.

Vehicle citations per population? Sum speeding, inspection stickers, failure to signal lane change, lights, etc.. into one number and then normalize it per 1,000 residents or something like that per jurisdiction? Isn’t each jurisdiction public knowledge?

If you believe even a fraction of this article, these guys would tack on charges for evading, false 911 call, distracted driving...

You know, I hadn’t even thought of that. You’d have to fight/contest it in court but can’t you contest some of the charges but not all of them?

Police departments like this should be burned to the ground with their sheriffs and mayors thrown in jail.

Film it all. When you do stop, turn your dash cam so it's pointing at the cop. Film it all. Take your day in court. If the judge also fails to serve justice, that's why we have representatives.

These shitbirds continue because they get away with it. They will stop when the state legislature decides to nuke the town.

Supposed to be, but I'm not sure if it's required to be online so you might have to make a call or appear in person to get some documents. And a lot of the data that is online is in pdf or some other unfriendly format.

It would probably have to be crowdsourced, which could be incentivized via some form of crypto tokenomics model which is all the rage right now.

This kind of shite just pisses me off. And there's nothing you can do about it because the courts, ie. judges are in on it as well. Seems like years ago this was happening in Cameron or Calcasieu parish. The tv show 20/20 did a piece on it and they eventually stopped.

To be honest I don't understand it all well enough to explain to anyone else, but basically there are thousands of cryptocurrencies because anyone can make one up and define the economic model behind it via a program.

For example, you can award tokens to someone for contributing data for a particular jurisdiction, award someone else for verifying it, or whatever. Tie the token to some service to give it a bit of value backing, and then boom we're billionaires.

What is this, Robeline?

What does it say when a retired sheriff, now legislator, brings a bill to get official state highway signs branding a village in his district as a “Speed Trap”?

That’s what HB 457, authored by Rep. Frank Howard (R-Many) would do for the Natchitoches Parish community of Robeline.

“Robeline is a speed trap,” Rep. Howard told the House Transportation Committee Monday. “Now, I don’t judge whether the tickets they give out are valid or not. I just know they’re really aggressive at giving them out. I constantly get complaints about it from the tourism people in Natchitoches, Sabine, and Vernon parishes.”

“I hear about it, too,” said Rep.Terry Brown (I-Colfax). “We invite people to come and spend money in our state, and this is an embarassment! I was in the airport in Chicago, and a couple, hearing I was from Louisiana, asked me if it was ‘safe’ to travel through Robeline, because they had read about it on the internet.”

Nodding in agreement, Howard responded, “They’ve got a population of 170-some people, yet they collected more than half-a-million dollars last year from traffic fines!”

And that military guy last year that got guns drawn on him and pepper sprayed while they simultaneously shouted at him to get out but also keep his hands up while he’s sitting seat belted in with his hands out the window.
