This year, Kotek and her colleagues advanced the most ambitious response to housing affordability challenges in the country. Lawmakers passed a first-in-the-nation cap on rent increases and, in an effort to spur new homebuilding, became the only state to eliminate single-family-only zoning in many of its residential neighborhoods.

The resulting legislation would cap rents statewide at 7% annually plus inflation and block landlords from evicting tenants without a reason. It passed in February with the landlord group opting not to oppose the bill, which included some exceptions for newly constructed buildings and small property owners.

We know that single-family zoning is exclusive,” Phan said. “Folks who have gained generational wealth from single-family homes in this country are by and large white people. That was by design.”

I exclude most people, and not by skin color. So I’m in the clear.

Well duh, because of definition of words. But, I’m an idiot so spell it out for me. Who does the “single-family zone” exclude, exactly?

So who was this great designer? Probably some southern racist conservative, right?

Everything is racism.

The reason the sky is blue is because of racism.

Progressives for you, right there.

It requires money to maintain a home.

Even if these "people of color" got these houses, they would have trouble maintaining it.

If thinking that makes me racis', so be it.

Had nothing to do with racism and everything to do with class. Hard to get out of what you are born into. I agree that the great society have been counter productive. I would love to see an America where every kid has a shot, but something tells me that this is not what it looks like.

So... if landlords can’t raise rents more than 7% and can’t evict “without a reason”, how is that going to affect the rental market?

Seems that landlords would need to be extra picky about new tenants and would be highly unwilling to cut them a break on the price if they were limited in how much they could increase the cost by legislative mandate.

Yep. I know a number of people that grew up poor that aren't any longer. Most had decent parents though even though they didn't have much. That's really what's missing here.

My neighborhood was worked no poor. Every kid I grew with got a degree. Most were first generation.

Every single one had two parents in the home.

It's time to stop blaming the system, blame single parent homes where the parent is apiece of shite.

It's not systematic racism, it's shitty culture. It's infected poor whites too
