Graduated from Shreveport in the last few years and I loved my time there. We had an awesome group of friends and always had something to do. Got good training and saw a lot of cool stuff. As it is at any medical school, the people who are smart and motivated do well and match into what they want. I thought my training was good and I matched into a very competitive field.
As for Shreveport, it was a solid place for med school. We bought a very affordable house near the med school and now they we have moved have rented it out to medical students very easily. There was plenty to do for fun while not studying/working.
Cwill177 - assume you were in my class or near me as the bathroom peeping tom was in my class. Dude was weird AF

some safe neighborhoods students live in, general atmosphere of school, do you feel as if coursework has prepared you for Step, and that the program itself has made you a competitive applicant that would be able to match into competitive specialties (out of state preferably), and the quality of faculty/profs

The tuition for UT Southwestern out of state for 2022-2023 is $36,318.
But most Texas schools are cheaper. They’re usually the exception to the high OOS tuition. They’re also highly focused to getting Texas residents with almost their entire classes being Texas residents or people with strong ties to the state.
The median tuition for OOS is around $65K for public and private for this past academic year. So in general going to your instate school is still far cheaper for most people

Texas is the exception for OOS tution.

would love to leave Louisiana at some point for residency and saw approx 50% at Nola placed in residency OOS.
My brother graduated from LSU Med in Shreveport and did residency in Albuquerque and SLC.

Congratulations on having options.

I chose LSUHSC-NO. I would choose it again all these years later if I had to. You’ll be fine.
As far as for all the distraction talk, trust me you’ll need some distractions. There’s a lot of opportunity in the 1-2 weeks immediately following block exams to enjoy yourself before having to dial back in and buckle down again.
Make the decision that’s best for you, but don’t be scared off if your heart says to come here. Most importantly, enjoy the hell out of this spring and summer while you can. And congrats

You’ll get really good at fixing gun shot wounds in either

I chose NO. I would again. What I would do differently now is to NOT live in NO. I’d live in Jefferson.
Congratulations. It’s busy and sometimes overwhelming but I look back at that as some of the best years I’ve had.

I was really good friends with some people in your class but was a resident there when this went down. He actually rotated with us right before he got arrested
I heard on his OB rotation he would start talking about the patient’s nail polish as they were giving birth

I’d look at Giesmar for welding school

I lived in New Orleans the last 4 years and moved back to north LA in January.
If you live somewhere like Luling or boutte like I did then I’d say New Orleans otherwise Shreveport (just make sure you live in the good sections) and steer clear of cedar grove, Hollywood blvd, Mansfield road between I-20 and 3132 in fact don’t stay anywhere between I-220 to I-20 south to 3132

Shreveport. You can take weekend trips to DFW. It’s cheaper. Safer. More convenient. Sure there’s more stuff to do there but Everything in Nola is an inconvenience. Parking, traffic etc.

In NOLA we knew someone who had decided he wanted to become a specialist in the human liver. He chose NOLA for that training. He said he got to work on more livers in one week that other parts of the country's interns would see in a year.
Says something positive about dealing with invasive wounds.

Your pitch for living in Shreveport is that he can go to Dallas on the weekends?

Shreveport is for people who don’t get in NOLA

Haven’t read all the responses. I’m from Baton Rouge and went to Shreveport for medical school. It’s not the most exciting city but I enjoyed my time there and got to go home fairly often. I think having a smaller class and being the only medical students rotating at the hospital (LSU NOLA and Tulane students share clinical spaces pretty sure), we got to do a ton. I know I got good training.

Yeah I don’t understand why you people try to act like Nola is so much better than Texas.

I did med school in Shreveport, residency in Louisville, now I live on the north shore.
Med school is a flood of info. Worry about that, not which city you’re in. Your life will revolve around the med school and the hospital. Enjoy your spare time with your classmates. You’ll keep some of those friends for life. You’ll have a little more time to breath in residency.
But first, get past Step 1. Then, the major decision fork: surgery or no surgery.
