I like nola over Shreveport in general but this is true.

lived in Shreveport for ~6 months while my then-SO finished up med school (a little over a decade ago)

it was my first time living away from home, but I really liked it

as others have said, lower COL, slower paced, and you can live away from more crime-prone areas... also you're likely going to have a core group of friends from your class to do things with, so it won't matter that you aren't near tons of restaurants/bars/etc.

ETA: no idea about programs themselves

This....again..it's not the amount of options or scale of events you have in NOLA or a major city, but I've never had a weekend where I thought...damn there is nothing to do

It’s a sad state that I have to say emphatically, Shreveport.

Does one offer better training than the other? Will one get you into a better residency?

Speaking for someone with experience at med school in both Shreveport and Nola, I say Shreveport hands down. The med school community is great, the cost of living a fraction, the distractions less, and it still has plenty of things to do to break the monotony. Don’t listen to the idiots.

NOLA is a pain in the arse to get around in.

It's actually EXTREMELY easy - once you get to know the surface streets.

The difference is in NOLA there's stuff to get around for, whereas in S'Port, you might as well just stay home.

From what I’ve heard is that STEP scores are pretty similar, would love to leave Louisiana at some point for residency and saw approx 50% at Nola placed in residency OOS. Can’t find this stat for Shreveport. Been hard to tell a lot about program atmosphere since interviews were all conducted on zoom.

I would go to NOLA.

1) Unless you are raising a family while in med school, at least NOLA has a lot more to do during your limited free time as opposed to casinos only.

2) IMO, Better known residency programs in NOLA (rotations through UMC, OLOL, CH-NOLA, etc), which can be helpful for matching purposes etc. Not saying you can't get to where to want to go through shreveport, you certainly can, but just something to consider.

3) Crime is certainly a factor. Even in shreveport, the med school is in a shitty area. I'm not sure if I would let it be the main factoring swaying my decision for my life/career. It's only 4 years in the end (unless you want to do residency and/or career in NOLA as well). I enjoyed the 4 years I lived in NOLA and no regrets about being there. I only had a brief consideration to moving back for a job in the end though, and couldn't see myself raising a family there.

Do you want to go to med school and live or do you want to go to med school and potentially be murdered and likely car jacked? that is the question.

I went to NOLA for PT school from 2015-2018 and was at the same campus you will be attending if you choose to go there. The campus itself is safe even though it is not in the best part of town. Elevated walkways keep you off the street while going from building to building and gated parking lots will protect you from theft. They also offer on campus living, but it is not the best in quality. I have no input about Shreveport but I think as long as you're smart about where you go and not stay out all night you'll be fine in NOLA.

Lol well then you’re wrong

Getting around NOLA is easy - and 90% of the time you do not need the interstate (unless you want to be shot on it)

Grew up in shreveport, and still family there (this is also making decision somewhat difficult). Would not live with parents though if I were to return. I have been at LSU BR for undergrad
