Out of State is the correct answer.

Yes, if your either have unlimited resources or someone else is paying for your education that's reasonable advice, otherwise going out of state and drowning in debt is not a very smart move. Got to one of the two schools, doesn't really matter which one, pay attention and learn the material, do well, and have your pick of residency programs. Then you can get paid to go wherever you want to train as that is what really matters when it comes to making your career. But, whatever you do, do not take student loan money that you don't need and get overloaded with unnecessary debt.

I'm calling BS on this statement.

My father drove a cab in New Orleans in the 50s before the interstate was built. Growing up in the 70s, he showed the best ways to get around. Sometimes it's faster to take the interstate, sometimes not - depending on time of day and desired direction of travel.

But the fact is that in New Orleans there are always alternate routes to go either up/downtown, or river/lakeside. As opposed to a town like Baton Rouge which is notorious for a lack of alternate routes to get around. Lafayette is even worse.

OP- I’ve lived in both places at points of my medical training and interacted with med students from both schools. I went to Med school in NOLA and I was very close with Shreveport med students (some of my best friends actually) while in residency.

At this point I would go to NOLA. The education there, or at the least the quality of the student, is better in New Orleans than Shreveport. People in Shreveport are nicer imo. Neither city is safe. NOLA is still overall a better place to be for 4 years, unless you have a ton of family/friends in the Shreveport area. I lived uptown but at this point with the crime issue I would just live outside the city and commute. Happy to answer any questions you might have about my experiences.

I had to make this exact choice in the mid-90s, and based on good reviews from students I already knew going to Shreveport, and my positive experience with interviews up there, chose LSU-S over NOLA.

I found the staff/professor were top-notch, the facilities are good, and you can easily walk from the classrooms directly into the hospital, anatomy lab, etc. The library is nice, I spent many hours there. The student break room with pool and ping pong tables, and gym are nice way to relax in between working your arse off.

Honestly, there are enough options for entertainment around there, considering you will literally never be caught-up with tests to prepare for, board exams, and then clinical rotations in the 3rd and 4th year. Less distractions can be a good thing! Happy to discuss my experience further if you want (off of Tiger droppings), or to answer any specific questions. Never regretted my decision one bit.

And Shreveport has a vastly easier and faster commute than New Orleans. In terms of quality of medical education it's a toss-up, Shreveport has proximity to BaylorSW and I know, at least as far as cardiology is concerned, there is a bit of interaction.

I can say that formerly, step one scores and pass rates at the Shreveport school were very favorable, and placement in residency programs has always been very good to excellent.

My last year in Shreveport more than half of the OB/GYN candidates didn’t match into OB/GYN. It’s not a competitive specialty…

Tell me about it. My commute to work in Shreveport was a whopping 7 minutes

OP will be fine at either place. Ultimately it’s a personal choice and there is no one objectively correct answer. I loved the entertainment/food options in NOLA compared to Shreveport. Neither place is perfect obviously. Clear advantages/disadvantages to both. It ultimately depends on OP’s personal preferences.

When I was in Med school in Nola a Tulane med student was shot (and almost executed, gun jammed twice) when he tried to stop a kidnapping at 3AM on magazine st.

While at LSU-S a fourth year Med student was arrested for putting cameras in the men’s locker rooms/showers. He hid the shower one in a shampoo bottle. He lives in Romania now

If OP wants to do pediatrics I would go Nola though. In Shreveport we didn’t have all the peds specialties and transferred some of our more unique peds pathology to CH NOLA.

OP, you’re getting a lot of feedback from Shreveporters in this thread. For what it’s worth, my friend group lived in NOLA prior to moving to Shreveport for medical school/residency. Of the 5 of us, all of us preferred NOLA to Shreveport.

Shreveport native, but have practiced law in New Orleans for 30 years. My wife is from Nola and my kids grew up here.

Yes, there is a bigger social scene in New Orleans, but I love my hometown and would probably have moved back there years ago if my wife was willing. Slower pace, lower cost of living, driving distance to a lot of stuff, and good Mexican food on every corner.

My daughter recently graduated from Shreveport. Lived off of Line in a nice area. 10 min to school and had no issues. I think she really enjoyed going to school there.

I had a duplex in Lakeview and rented it out to med students in the 90s. They were the best tenants ever.

I don't know the current situation on the ground in NOLA right now but I have to assume that Lakeview is still somewhat safe and is probably the best place to look for an apartment.

Here's the reality:

Statistically, you will end up in residency where you went to medical school.

If you are smart you can either move out of state for a non-competitive specialty or match in-state for a competitive specailty.

If you are really smart you can do whatever you want.

Your school will not be the limiting factor on where you go afterwards.

Getting into an OOS med school is even harder. Most public ones have instate bias so not much of a shot as an OOS student. Some private ones are top tier schools while the lower tier ones receive a ridiculous amount of applications. Also tuition is higher because it’s either private or you’re paying OOS tuition for public schools

Well, the LSU med schools are so expensive now that the out of state tuition for a Louisiana resident to go to some other schools (if they can get in) isn't much different.

The tuition for UT Southwestern out of state for 2022-2023 is $36,318. LSU New orleans this year is $32,936.95 for in state. So for a Louisiana resident to go out of state may not be much difference in price (though harder to be accepted).

Plus a few select med schools are not charging tuition (though this makes it incredibly hard to get into those ones).

Anyway, blanket statements usually aren't correct is all I am saying.

Looking at Doximity just about all Shreveport Residency Programs are 3-4 stars. Wouldn't that also be indicative of the Med School by osmosis ?
