A New York state lawmaker wants to block the use of food stamps for "luxury" items like high-end steaks, lobster and junk food.
Sen. Patty Ritchie, R-Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence County, introduced a bill Wednesday that would further restrict the types of purchases that can be made through the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as the food stamp program.
Ritchie's bill would target what she calls "luxury food items," blocking food stamp recipients from using their benefits to purchase certain foods that are either high-end or not nutritious. The legislation would require the state Office of Temporarily Disability Assistance to come up with a list of prohibited items.
But the bill's memo lays out some examples: lobster, certain steaks, decorated cakes and energy drinks, to name a few.

I'd rather them just block junk food that leads to obesity like fruit punch and twinkies.
There are healthy cheap foods.
I'm fine with them getting steak tbh. There are steak and lobster deals at the store sometimes and they aren't feeding their kids steak and lobster every night. The kids being obese is the biggest concern for me.

Sure.
But when you run out of money on your EBT card the first week, accept the fact that you're pretty much SOL for the rest of the month.
Hey, que sera. Actions have consequences. Live and learn.

How about this?
All they get are giant sacks of rice and beans. Subsistence food.
No reason they should be shopping, continuing to make poor choices.

Why not both?

Too complicated to manage. Just let them buy whatever they want for a period of time - say a year - then they're done, time to earn your dinner.

Seen the price of ground beef lately? Ground beef is now a luxury.

Block premium foods, and junk foods.

I don't really know. I just don't hate the idea of a $12 steak nearly as much as I do the giant jugs of orange drink and family size box of twinkies they feed their kids at night.
Maybe that's it, they won't be giving their children the steak and lobster.

I don't think food stamps should exist at all
Posted on 2/22/16 at 7:44 am to Kujo
Absolutely not!
Should poor people be allowed to have a Mercedes just so they don't feel marginalized?
shite pisses me off more than just about anything

Once they have the money I don't really care what they do with it. Damage is already done. Trade it for cigarettes for all I give a shite but once it's gone you don't get anything else.

I just don't think this is a huge issue.
The much bigger issue is the cheap as frick options that are pure processed sugar.

Who are these people buying lobster with food stamps? Granted, I dont shop at wal-mart. I've never seen anyone buying luxury items with food stamps. Junk food, yes. Luxury items, no.

Well we are paying for their healthcare. And they might have kids. Vicious cycle.

I agree that chips, candy, soft drinks, etc should be totally off limits.
It's hilarious that people believe they're entitled to buy shite food with the free money they take from the pockets of rich folks for whom they have so much disdain.
Might as well just rob me on the street and cut out the middle man.

it's food..so yes.
but, just like the rest of us, you spend too much money on expense food, you eat ramen as a punishment.
