i'm not even going to comment on the subsistence of the article because this has been discussed many times in the past.
What i want to discuss is this
If you can't see a problem with this line of thinking this country is fricked beyond belief. Of course it targets the poorest. They're the ones on the assistance.
What i want to discuss is this

Restrictions on the type of purchases that can be made with welfare benefits have been popular among conservatives, including in New York, where Republican lawmakers have pushed to restrict where benefit recipients can take out cash with their EBT cards.
^^^^^^ what is wrong with what the republicans are trying to do?
But such restrictions have been opposed by Democrats in the Legislature, who say they unfairly target the low-income people who rely on public benefits. So the bill likely doesn't have much of a future in the Democrat-controlled Assembly, where it hasn't yet been introduced

hey, look it's the jackass. Has he tried to make this about race yet?
So because it's a low percentage of people taking advantage of the program it's just water under the bridge. No news here right?

I regularly pass a convenience store that has a big sign outside proclaiming they accept EBT. Makes me want to stop and set the place on fire.

No, but unsurprisingly you have.

When the percentage is as low as it is then yes it's pretty much water under the bridge. Personally I don't know anyone on foodstamps (except when I was in college a few students were) but I know quite a few are on them, furthermore the only time I hear about people buying lobster and steak and other luxury items on food stamps is when I read about it on Tigerdroppings. Maybe I should get out more.

Only stores I see that do that are Dollar General type stores.

Yes, the poor and lazy deserve luxury items too.

We should make the worthless food stamp people pick up trash on the interstate. We wouldn't have such a litter problem then
This is a great idea. There is no reason they can't mow grass and do clean up work.

I'd be more than fine with government assisted food being limited to things that are actually nutritious for people. If you're not actually paying for your food you shouldn't have free reign on buying a ton of junk leading to others then more likely paying for your medical bills as well.

I say, cut the EBT card money in half. Let them buy whatever they want...booze, gas, food... After they run out in a week -- maybe the lazy fricks will get a fricking J O B.

and any abuse of a system paid for and funded by taking money from me is not ok in my book. I will continue to outrace over even 1% abuse bt i'm sure it's way higher than that. It has to be since i see abuse regularly and i'm not even looking for it. It's right there in my face when i go to check out at Albertsons or go to the seafood market to buy a few sacks of crawfish.

They need to have food stamp stores that only carry certain food products that provide essential nutrition and very cheap. The government could use its massive purchasing power and get things like 10 pound bags of beans, rice and potatoes for next to nothing. Of course it will never happen because it makes too much sense but that is what should happen.

If that. Not even close if you can't stomach one portion of the MRE.
Fine give them 2 MREs a day. If they can't stomach a portion they obviously aren't that hungry and beggars can't be choosers.

Who are these people buying lobster with food stamps? Granted, I dont shop at wal-mart. I've never seen anyone buying luxury items with food stamps. Junk food, yes. Luxury items, no.
I see it every single time I go to the store. I went to a public high school and the kids in my class would argue about who's family gets the most food stamps. Its a joke.

Well that's all fine and dandy, just don't judge my opinion irrationally because I have different experiences than you.
