Should people in DC be concerned about the hurricane?

Do I need to head north to avoid the damage?

Could/probably will get a lot of rain. Leaving seems extreme

I wouldn’t be panicking, but I wouldn’t assume I was safe either

Trump is there draining the swamp. You're good.

Does your area flood? If so I’d get out. If not, stock up on provisions in the case of 1-2 weeks without power.

I’m not saying that you will be powerless that long but just be prepared in case

Stay where you are. Now is the time to find a cute lady from one of the embassies and tell her how since you're from Louisiana you know how to handle hurricanes and she should seek shelter at your place over the weekend.

I can't think of a better source for advice on DC than TD. Stay glued to this thread and please check in safely.

soil is very saturated with water as we've had tons of rain this year so a dumping of rain over the weekend combined with high winds might see unprecedented flooding and downed trees

Bingo. I am 58 and I have never seen this much consistent rain, in a given year, in my life. If we get a bunch from the storm it will screw things up but shouldn’t be life threatening.

The wind will likely be down if landfall in the Carolinas. DC will get a lot rain though if on the east side of the storm. Just pray it doesn't stall out like Harvey

It would probably be a good idea to monitor the local weather/news stations.

If you live within the District, as I do, that's unlikely. Almost all of our power lines are buried. The danger here is big mature trees falling on your car that's parked out on the street.

And flooding. Alexandria already flooded yesterday. I live on a hill that drains down into Rock Creek Park so I don't have to worry about it, but others do. Especially people with a basement.

I was flying out of National Friday night after work but I got my flight changed to Thursday morning. Even though I'm on AA and not going through Charlotte, I was worried that we either wouldn't have a plane or a crew come Friday evening.

we're in Alexandria but our home is on a rather large hill so we don't anticipate much in terms of flooding but you never know. Alexandria is passing out sandbags since areas near the river are already flooding.

I know there isn't a "good" time but this storm is seriously coming at the worst possible time
