I've often wondered if the country would be better off if at least some military experience was required to run for President. How can someone be Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces if they have no clue how the military works? On a related note, should the U.S. implement a required period of military/public service similar to what Israel has?
Such a thing might cure some of the younger generation of their soy addiction.

No.

And they can be CIC the same way a CEO can be CEO of a manufacturing company without ever having worked on a production floor.

By this requirement, Hunter Biden would be a better choice than Trump. Think about that.

Well people are getting elected to Congress without knowing how anything works.

No but a cognitive test on public television wouldn’t hurt

Historically speaking, veteran presidents haven't made the best presidents. Not bad but definitely not the top of the list. The good soldiers don't make good politicians, too much BS.

Always sort've respected Schwarzkopf for turning it down. He knew his limits and he knew he couldn't deal with politics.

I've never served but respect the hell out of those that do/did. If you haven't signed on the dotted line to die for this Country then you shouldn't lead it.

eta, Unless it's Donald Trump

If your premise is that past generals that became President were effective leaders and we would be better off with those rather than a senile dumbass, I agree

Yes, if you drop out of high school, college or trade school.

No but they should have a track record of being pro-military.

Why? The military is completely voluntary and the vast majority of it is noncombat. So you can't be President if you are a transcendent leader in the business world, but if you spent a couple years in Shreveport making sure you know which nuts to tighten on some machine you can?

Seems stupid.

No. But being a community organizer should automatically disqualify someone.

They need to not be geriatric frickwads

70-80 year olds are essentially unemployable in any sector of the world (mental decline, skill mismatch, etc.). Yet they “thrive” as politicians and get to run the country in all levels

No. I mean, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and the Secretary of Defense have a lot of military experience, but they haven't shown to be effective leaders during all of this.

No, the founding fathers intended for the Military to always report to civilian authority.

However, for your point Bill Clinton was the first modern President to not have military experience ... I assume you would have to go back to FDR for the next one.
